Oh, Gods, the sleepless nights...

Pros: Out and out the smartest game yet!
Cons: Bribing is little too easy. The "advisor" is annoying.
The Bottom Line:
A great game at a great price. Just don't have anything else to do for the next couple of nights!
I love strategy games, but they all have one failure: Lack of depth. Any game can make it hard by drowning you in enemies, making you control 500 units or micromanaging the last cent of money out of the NPCs so you can't compete.
But, Rome Total War doesn't have to resort to such trickery. It is just plain amazing. In any battle there must be over 100 variables being considered at every junction from the tiredness of characters to moral to weather to unit on unit "personal" animosities. It is just the most "human" of AIs that I have done battle with. On the macro scale this is the first game I have played where the AI has a memory about being tricked in the past and won't allow you to pull the same stunt a second time (like sue for peace, then attack 2 rounds later. It won't accept your peace terms the next time.)
I will admit that bribing troops is a little too easy (if you have the wads of cash required) and assassination is a little too hard, but other than that it is amazing.
While everyone else is focusing on graphics rates and number of polygons, these guys actually managed to make the game fun!
