In what was an eventful campaign for Villa the 2011/12 season had its ups and downs. It was a turbulent season - full of emotion; from the despair of injuries to key players to the joy of big victories such as the triumph away at Chelsea and wondrous goals such as the memorable 20 yard curling strike by Andreas Weimann. It was also a season for reflection as fans rallied to show their support for Stiliyan Petrov who was forced to end the campaign early due to serious illness. Showing the spirit that so endeared him to the fans the Villa captain still turned out to show his support for the club despite the shock news. And as the fans rose to their feet in appreciation of the midfielder it was perhaps a turning point that saw Villa go on to lose just one game from the next seven securing some vital results to avoid any serious threat to the club’s Premier League status. The Villa team united and showed the spirit that has kept the club in the top-flight since its formation 20 years ago. The performances of Stephen Ireland and Shay Given stood out in an eventful season which despite the final league position was anything but boring.

Testing. Transitional. At times tremendous. There was never a dull moment in Aston Villa’s 2010/11 season. An internationally renowned manager took over the reins the club broke their transfer record to sign one of the most natural goalscorers the Premier League has ever seen and the young lions roared onto the top flight stage. It started and finished with an excellent home win and there was lots off drama in between - both on and off the pitch. The arrival of Gerard Houllier saw some changes at the club and as the new manager took the reins; introducing new players and a new strategy Villa ended the season strongly; in free-scoring form and with a solid team performaces on which to build. Darren Bent’s record £24 million transfer quickly proved to be a shrewd move delivering an air of excitement and providing welcome support up front as the forward quickly became the clubs leading goalscorer of the campaign. Closing the season with victories over Liverpool and Arsenal Villa also picked up vital points from clashes with Manchester City Chelsea and Manchester United as the likes of Bent Downing and Young combined to lead Villa’s resurgence back up the table building firm foundations on which to mount a serious challenge in the years ahead.
