Pros: Great, versatile control; pleasant smell; brushes out easily
Cons: Price; bulky can
The Bottom Line:
Excellent product -- will hold anything!
I am a die-hard (pun intended) Hard Head user. I have hard-to-manage thick hair, neither straight nor "wavy", short and layered within an inch of its life, and I couldn't manage without Hard Head.
My stylist introduced me to Hard Head when I was wearing my hair a bit longer. After the initial sticker shock (about $22 CDN) I bought my first can. I can report that it works on longer styles, too.
It is a versatile spray since you can layer it on for increasing degrees of firmness, depending on what an occasion calls for. The name is somewhat misleading because a quick spray does not really produce "hardness" (but you can easily accomplish that if you like). Even when you use a lot and it's hard, it doesn't *look* hard. However, be wary if you are going to be photographed indoors because the flash will reflect off the product somewhat if the camera is close to you. I have one photograph in which I look quite blonde when actually my hair is dark brown!
It doesn't produce flakes and it brushes out very easily. It does, however, contribute significantly to bed head (not Bed Head (tm)!). I agree with the previous poster who mentioned that occasional use of a clarifying shampoo is a good idea (I use Neutrogena and that works well for me).
As it happens, I got caught in the rain yesterday so this is fresh in my mind: I was still able to retreat to the ladies' room and style my wet hair with my fingers into something livable. However, Bed Head does not really work well when applied to wet hair so make sure your 'do is dry before spraying.
I find the scent quite pleasant, and I'm kind of fussy about scented products so that's saying something.
I haven't been able to find a smaller can that is more convenient for purse or travel...the large can is quite unwieldy for those purposes.
This isn't Mom's stinky weak hair spray so have no fear!
