Pros: Bose's newer smaller speakers, 6 disc CD, touch screen RF remote
Cons: price, no DVD player
The Bottom Line:
Want a system that you can control with a touch of a button and have music filter through your house? This is it! However not for the cheap at heart!
If you are looking for a system that will put sound through your entire house, then this is the system for you!
The Speakers
Bose has just recently introduced their new Jewel cube speakers which are 40% smaller than the regular Acoustimass speaker set that got Bose in business. These smaller cubes will produce a somewhat brighter sound over the Acoustimass speakers, but it's a sound that you would really have to be listening for. Also along with the 5 speakers comes the patented Bass Module. This is what will produce all your bass sounds from the system. Placement on this really doesn't matter but Bose recommends placing it in a corner for maximum effect of reflection. The soundstage is very nice, everything you would expect from a Bose system!
The Music Center
Along with the 5 Jewel Cube speakers and Bass Module comes the Music center. This music center has a 6 Disc CD changer built in, which means you will have to add your own DVD player to fully complete the system. The system comes with a Digital coaxial hookup so that you can pass the system the digital signal from the DVD player. What really makes this system different from the others is the ability to hookup 3 other rooms in your house from this same system.
Here is where I will admit that Bose will get a little foolish with marketing this product. They advertise ability to power 4 zones. Well the 1st zone is the system it self, your 5.1 surround sound. That leaves 3 other rooms to hookup, however, these 3 zones are NOT powered. This means that you will have to power these zones yourself with a seperate amplifier or a set of powered speakers.
The Remote
The remote that comes with the system is very unique in the aspect that it's touch screen and uses radio frequency rather than infrared. This allows you to control your system from any room in the house as the signal goes through walls and ceiling and operates from 65ft from the music center. The remote allows you to control all 4 zones on the system. However, Bose has the option to allow you to buy another remote. Say, for example, you don't want to have to drag a remote with you upstairs and downstairs with you, then get another remote (i think $350) and you can now have one upstairs and downstairs.
The Lowdown
The system itself is amazing, allowing you to pump sound throughout your entire house, outside next to a pool or wherever you want to listen to your favorite CDs. Just remember that shelling out the upfront cost of $3,499 doesn't get your system entirely hooked up. Remember that to hook up the additional 3 zones will cost you more for speakers and the power to get to those speakers.
The system is great and I love it every time I turn it on! It did meet and exceed all of my expectations. Also as another high recommendation for this system is Bose Customer Service for problems with systems. Since I have had the system the Music Center display went out. I called Bose and they replaced it for free! They sent me a brand new one in the mail and I just mailed back the broken one. No cost at all!
