Pros: Cheap!
Reliable
Long lasting
Easy to use
Cons: Difficult to use 2nd feeder tray
Outdated design
The Bottom Line:
I would purchase it again, at this price. It has been worth every penny.
I purchased the Brother HL-2140 laser printer, refurbished, through Staples.com for $80 in September 2009. I bought a new toner for it on Tuesday. That's right, the toner cartridge lasted over two years. And I'm not just an average user, mind you. I'm in law school, so that means I'm printing articles, papers, resumes, etc. constantly.
The unit is a bit large and clunky, with an outdated design, but that is not important to me. There are no complicated buttons or functions -- just three lights (Toner, Drum, Error), and a button you press after you've fixed an error to restart the printer. Perfect for the not-so-tech-savvy.
One thing that I do not like about this printer, though, is the feeder. Using it is a pain because there is no separate tray to hold the blank paper--you have to hold it while it feeds through. Also, don't try to feed more than one page at a time--multiple pages get caught and jams the printer. But it is fine for envelopes, labels, and such, as long as you're only printing it one sheet at a time.
I bought a generic toner cartridge refill for $10 on Amazon, so overall, this has been a solid purchase for a very low price.
Even though the printer is older, both my MacBook Air (late 2011) and my EeePC recognize it through plug-and-play. I did not have to install any seperate software.
