The EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM is a high performance, water-resistant, and ultra wide-angle Canon L-series lens. It has been specifically designed for improved edge-to-edge image quality that will meet the strict requirements of professional and high-end amateur photographers. It features 3 high-precision aspherical lens elements, each of a different type: ground, replica and GMo for even better image quality than the original EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM. The circular aperture produces a beautiful and natural background blur when shooting at wider apertures. Other features include internal focusing, a ring type USM (Ultra Sonic Monitor), and new AF algorithms for fast and quiet autofocusing

Amazing Professional Lens
| Author's Rating: |

Pros: Fast focus, sharp & contrasty photos, build quality
Cons: Price & weight
The Bottom Line:
Amazing lens, fast focusing, sharp and contrasty photos. A bit heavy and expensive but worth it.
The Canon 28-70 F2.8 L is one of the best camera lenses that I have ever shot with. As with all L series lenses this one is built like a tank. With all metal construction it is truly a beast of a lens. The weight counter balances well a pro camera like the EOS3 or 1V, but the lens can be awkward to shoot with on a lighter body like the Elan II.
Pictures taken with this lens are sharp and contrasty. There's some slight softness at the corners when shooting wide open, but this is really only apparent upon careful loupe investigation. Focusing is incredibly fast when combined with my EOS3. Remember that this is an F2.8 lens through out the zoom range. For most EOS cameras this means that the lens is fast enough to allow focusing sensors to work in cross mode no matter whether you are at 28mm or 70mm. That's huge when trying to focus in low light.
Finally, the 77mm filter size can make buying filters for this lens an expensive proposition. Combine that with the retail price of this lens and you're talking about spending a significant sum of money. All in all, I'd say the lens is worth it.
