Purchased the 50D body  about 6m ago.
Added Canon's 18-200 EF zoom -  immediately.

Very happy. Wife keeps stealing it. :)   Shot on the order of 6000 frames so far.
Recommend it as a 1st DSLR if you want to skip the entry level (Rebel) - is what I did.

The camera takes stunning pictures,   just make sure you add a nice flash unit to it, when working indoors.

Moved to it from a Powershot G5 ....   obviously the difference is tremendous.
The camera definitely met my expectations.

I won't go into feature reviews here,  there are a gazilion sites that do it in great detail.

The things that come to my mind when I think of the 50D:
- fast ... it is very fast  (compared to anything i used before [ie.subjective])
- the grip is super comfortable   (again this is subjective)
- battery lasts and lasts  (but then again i shoot without live-view)
- skin tones -> outstanding

Things I wish were better:
- I want the AF point and mode to be configurable in the NoFlash program mode ... I realize that this is probably how its done in all their products but still - i wish i had that level of control (seems to me that 95% of shots are taken either in P or NoFlash)
- the battery indicator could provide more detail .... % perhaps.
- i am struggling with the depth of field  -   but i am sure that is more of a user issue, rather then a shortcoming of the camera .... still if there was an easier way to show what my depth will be at the 1/2press point.  (I can just hear the experienced photographers laughing at me here!)
- mini HDMI cable should be included
