The new EF28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM is an entirely new L-series design lens (and a significantly enhanced successor to Canon?s EF35-350mm f/3.5-5.6L USM zoom introduced 11 years ago). Though it offers 11x zoom capabilities (compared with the 10x capability of its predecessor), this newly designed, 22-element L-series lens combines Canon?s newest optical glass advances, faster autofocus and a groundbreaking Image Stabilization system that makes capturing incredible images a snap, even when the zoom is at max, the shutter speed is slow and the camera is handheld.

Eliminates excess lenses when baggage is limited

Pros: The expansive zoom range, the IS, & its surprisingly fast auto focus
Cons: In my opinion there's no cons associated with this lens.
The Bottom Line:
2 stage IS, fast auto focus, & quality components justify the added weight & price. I heartily recommend this lens to my friends.
I use a Canon 1D Mark II, a 10D, & a newly acquired 40D for all around photography. My lens inventory include a Canon 50mm f/1.4, 16-35mm f/2.8L, 28-70mm f/2.8L, 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS, 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, 70-200mm F/2.8L IS, 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 IS, & a Sigma 50-500 f/4-6.3.
I travel a lot & many times the amount of baggage allowed is limited. I figure with the purchase of my new Canon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L lens I'll only have to bring along my Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L for wide angles, & maybe the Sigma 50-500mm f/4-6.3 telephoto lens if I'll have to take some long distance shots. Or, I can also setup with my 1.4 or 2.0 converters.
I've been going around the city taking a wide variety of photos with the Canon 28-300mm lens mounted to my Mark II & the 16-35mm lens on my 40D. So far this setup has been producing satisfactory results. This combination has covered the assorted photographic situations encountered.
Although this lens is on the expensive side I feel it's worth the purchase price if it'll be able to take the overall place of lugging around my Canon 28-70mm L, 28-135mm, 70-300mm, 70-200mm L, & 100-400mm L. So far I'm very happy with the versatility & performance of this lens.
