Not overhyped

Author's Rating: Rating: 4/5 stars

Pros: Decent Graphics, Awesome Combat, Ridiculously huge bosses, Awesome weapons, Dante

Cons: Slow start, Nero, camera problems

The Bottom Line:
The overall experience was fun, the game is full of stylish and action-packed fighting and has an average storyline. I'd recommend it to any hack and slash fan.

Author's Review
I read the other review for this game, which criticizes it to the bare bone. However, the writer of that review is forgetting something. The Devil May Cry series is a HACK AND SLASH series. Everything the reviewer complained about are things that are part of hack and slash games.

Now, Devil May Cry 4 is the best hack and slash game I've played to date. Usually I don't care for hack and slash games, but this one was actually enjoyable for me.

Pros:

The first thing I noticed were the graphics. They were pretty decent, obviously better than any previous DMC series, but still... They could have used some work. The graphics aren't bad, but they are not worth praising, which is something the video game magazines were doing. I wouldn't say the graphics takeaway from the goodness of the game, it's just they could have done a better job.

The second thing I noticed was the combat. It uses this amazing combo system in which you utilize your guns, sword, and devils arm. There's a sense of the feeling that "I'm awesome" when you leap into the air and kill a couple enemies before ever hitting the ground. The sword combos are done by variations in how quickly you press the Y button. Of course there is an automatic system that you can turn on in which you just button mash and watch Nero or Dante do really sweet moves.

The third thing I noticed that I loved is that the bosses are gigantic. The last boss has fingers that are literally bigger than your character. It makes your boss battles seem truly epic and gives you a feeling of accomplishment when you take them down.

The fourth thing I noticed were the weapons. Particularly, the weapon. The weapon I am referring to is not acquired till later in the game after you begin to play as Dante. The weapon is called Pandora. It is a metallic brief case that can take the form of 666 different things. Can it really? I doubt it. But it can take the form of a lot of sweet bazookas, crossbows that shoot rockets, lasers, and this big hovering thing that shoots homing missiles. It's an awesome weapon. Sure, the swords and other guns are cool too. But, when I got this weapon, I think it's safe to say it was all I really used from there on.

Another thing which isn't really AWESOME, but still adds to it I suppose, is that it has leaderboards in which you can compare your scores with those of every other devil hunter in the world.

Cons:

The first thing that I didn't like was that the beginning started off slow. By that I mean the story, at first, was kind of confusing; I didn't really know what was going on, where I was going, or why I was going there. It seemed like in the beginning I was just aimlessly wandering, but after a few cut scenes, I had the story figured out. And on the whole, the story was ok. It's not some heart stopping amazing story, but let's just say for a hack and slash, I've never seen a better storyline.

The next thing I didn't like, or rather was annoyed by, was the main character Nero. Where the hell is Dante? Nero is this emo arrogant chump who thinks he's better than everyone, but actually isn't. He isn't the funny cocky Dante either. He's just annoying and isn't nearly as cool as Dante. BUT NEVER FEAR! Halfway through the game you get to be Dante, and be him till almost the very end. Dante is as cool as ever. It makes up for it. I just wish there was less emo Nero and more awesome Dante.

And the final annoyance was the camera. There's just some times where the camera isn't facing the way you want it to so you accidentally get hit by a trap laser thing or something. But overall it doesn't hinder the gameplay experience or leave you throwing your controller to the ground.

Overall:

Overall playing this game was a positive experience. I wouldn't go as far as some gaming magazines to give it a 9/10, but it deserves at least a good 8 or 7.5/10.
