The long awaited release of Doom 3 sees it claiming two of gaming’s highest accolades: that of having the best graphics ever seen and of being the scariest video game ever made. The question of graphics seemed a pretty open and shut case from the moment the game was announced--this is the first new title from legendary developers iD Software since Quake III: Arena and as such it features completely new graphics technology. The reason the game is likely to win the Dr Who award for behind the sofa gaming is in the way it chooses to use its awesome new graphical power. The game’s storyline is a loose remake of the first Doom game (from way back in 1993) but the style of gameplay is actually radically different. This is more like a first person Resident Evil than anything else, with corpses lunging out at when you least expect it and monsters scattering their innards all over the place whenever you introduce them to the business end of your shotgun. In actual fact though it’s not the graphics that are the most disturbing aspect of the game but the sound, with every unknown noise ratcheting the tension up so much that by the time a monster actually does appear it’s almost a relief to tangle with them. Doom 3 is not for the faint hearted and that’s not a warning to be taken lightly--anyone keen on wearing oversized women’s shirts will have a coronary within minutes. The third instalment in an award-winning series, Close Combat III: The Russian Front, sees the action move from the West to the East, as it covers the doomed German assault on Russia during the Second World War. Although the scale of individual battles remains the same, covering tactical squads of infantry and individual vehicles, the overall campaign takes in the whole encounter from the opening days of Operation Barbarossa to the retreat to Berlin, following the historical path, so that regardless of your achievements should you play as the Germans, you will end up fighting your way back to Berlin (if you live that long).Much remains in place from the previous Close Combat games, with the overhead maps and simple control methods, but where this real-time strategy game disappoints in comparison to Close Combat 2, is it's obsession with tanks. Yes, tanks are lovely, but the Close Combat engine doesn't deal with vehicles as effectively as it does infantry, with poor path finding and poor AI, both friendly and computer controlled. However, tanks are so powerful in this game, that even when working your way through the tractor factories at Stalingrad, you are better off with a largely armoured force, which is a shame as the opportunities for street-to-street infantry encounters through heavily shelled Russian cities would have ideally suited the game, but never quite come to fruition. This said, some neat additions to the series, such as leaders with set command radius and the ability to apply waypoints provide enough to keep fans of the series coming back for more. --Jason Weston Minimize

Though presenting the best death-match experience around, Quake 3's two game types lack the variation and originality of a similar game, Epic's Unreal Tournament. Although you'll need the latest video card and computer hardware, it's impossible to dispute the sheer beauty of Quake 3's 3-D engine. The 26 maps are filled with exquisite architecture and impressive special effects; further, Quake 3 provides dozens of highly detailed player models to choose from. If you've played other id Software first-person shooters, the weapons should all look familiar: machine gun, shotgun, plasma gun, grenade launcher, rocket launcher, lightning gun, railgun and the BFG 10K. Though impressively rendered and balanced, you've likely used them before in id's Doom, Quake or any number of other first-person action games. Hopping online and competing against other Quake 3: Arena players worldwide requires only a 56K or better Internet connection and a few mouse clicks. Quake 3 offers an infinitely replayable multiplayer experience (and a violent one--not for youngsters), but an unsatisfying solo game.
