Author's Review

Moving to a new multi-level house, we thought we had all bases covered by having sufficient portable phones for all levels. Unfortunately, someone else wanted one of those phones more than we did. The old dinosaur was over 10 years old, but it was a good phone, doubt if they were able to pawn it for much. Realizing we would need another portable in the family room, I bopped over to Target and picked this nice GE phone up for a decent price.

Having limited desk space with two computers, the GE 26938 was the perfect choice. The base pad is small, about 2” x 3”, and the phone docks in an upright position. Docking in this position, it is easier to grasp when you have one hand on the keyboard and another in a bag of potato chips - grin.

It has an LCD display and caller ID capability. There is storage for 10 speed dial numbers and it is a single line type phone. The user’s guide states that is has 40 channels and 900 Mhz, what does that mean? To me the only thing necessary is the fact that it rings and when you answer it the call is clear. Neither the caller or myself have static or difficulty hearing each other.

The phone comes with the standard 1-year limited warranty. You must return the phone to the stated service center, including proof of purchase, for repair. For the price, I’d just replace the thing. It comes with a complete, and I mean complete, instruction manual. I doubt if I will get it all read and comprehended before the phone goes out of style. However they take great pains in their instructions to make the set up and operation of the phone easy for anyone to understand. The instruction manual is in English only, a rarity in itself.

The phone body is almost full-sized, like the old desk top phones. I think that is one reason for the clarity when in use, you aren’t speaking to the keypad but into the actual speaker of the phone. Being full size doesn’t mean it is bulky though, it fits nice and compactly in your hand. I’ve roamed all three levels in my home with no interference, so the range is quite adequate.

For an inexpensive unit, and a compact size, this would be a nice phone for a child’s room, a dorm room, a bedroom, or for an extra phone in your home. It’s great in an area that has limited space. And besides, GE is a name that you’ve learned to trust over the years.
