Flexible Multi-Use GPS

Pros: Recommended - Very good unit for planning routes on computer first.
Cons: Only one very minor item - no strap hole provided.
The Bottom Line:
This is a good GPS unit for multi-uses with a great feature of planning routes on the computer as well as the bread crumb / re-trace feature when hiking
I have used this GPS for my car, hiking and biking. I plan routes on my computer using MapSource or BaseCamp which includes printable directions as well as a route profile (shows altitude variations) and then I transfer the route to the Nuvi 550.
This planning feature is very useful, especially as I use it to plan routes for my car club's outings. If necessary, I can provide car club members with printed directions with accurate mileages between turns, etc as well as an overall map with the route. Sometimes I find the maps are not completely up-to-date but that is not a fault of the Nuvi 500.
It is a very good all-round unit and I would recommend it for multi-uses. I bought a RAM mount for my bicycle and love using it on my bike rides with our cycling group (on or off road trips). One does not need a bicycle computer when using this Nuvi 550, as it tells you accurately your speed and distances travelled.
It is very good when hiking and does a good job at picking up signals when under tree cover or hiking through bush.
I have not used it for boating but feel it should be okay.
I would like Garmin to have the ability to attach a thin strap to the GPS unit, similar to a digital camera strap, but there is no loop hole provided.
