Best racing game for PSx by far

Pros: 600+ cars, 20 tracks, 10,000 credits, your driving skill to conquer the world.

Cons: Glitches due to rushed release may ruin the game for some.

My first indoctrination into playing games on a console was when a friend who wasn't a very good gaming racer invited me to play his new game on his pretty new Playstation. I helped him put all the good cars in his garage (and let him brag about it as if it was his) because I had all my money in computers, I didn't have time or money for a console. Ten years later I finally gave in and bought a Playstation just to play this game again. It's just that good.

You start with 10,000 credits, you buy and modify a car, race it, win more credits, and buy/modify more, better and faster cars. Racing over 20 tracks from all over the world (real and made for the game) you enter leagues and race againt the computer to earn more credits. The progression from novice racer to professional with 100 cars in your garage and completing the game by winning all the races takes time, but is very satisfying.

The graphics of this game pale in comparison to most games you can get for the PS2, but this one pushed the limits of the PSx. The physics engine is also excellent. You can also play against a friend in arcade mode, either with ready made cars, or cars from your garage.

This game has over 600 cars and 20 tracks. That's enough to keep even the best gamers busy. There are several guides online that can help you along in finding the best buy for every race, or you can explore the world yourself. Whatever route you plan on taking, its a win.

Due to a rushed release date, there are some minor glitches in the game. The US game can only complete 98.2%, because the drag racing element that was planned for GT2 was scrapped at the last moment, but the percentage wasn't refigured. The Europe version goes to 100.9% because they have Vauxhall races, a brand that isn't in the US version.

All in all, this is one great game. Whether it be the graphics, the physics engine, the enormous amount of cars, or the wide variety of tracks, it really has it all. If you haven't played this game, and have an old PSx lying around, I'd highly recommend finding a copy of this game and go to it. You could find one at a used game store or online for under $5
