I bought the Dimage Z10 in early December when the prices took a pre-Christmas dip. I have never used a Minolta but a newspaper I used to work for would not buy anything else. I am impressed by the design and find it very easy to use. The body is plastic, but it has an overall texture to it that reminds me of cast aluminum. The lens is totally sealed into the body. This impressed me because friends mentioned they had trouble with dirt entering around the lens barrel and the body on both Nikon P&S and Canon P&S cameras. I threw a neutral filter on the front to protect the lens. Minolta also offers a wide angle lens that can be added for extra bucks.

I figured this camera would be a runaway hit this Christmas, and while sales where very good, Canon and Nikon surpassed it. I think this is because the average person hasn't a clue to what fun a telephoto lens can be!

This camera is difficult to compare with anything else cause there is no camera except the Z3 that comes close to the feature set of the Z10. You can go from manual to auto with the flick of a switch. And when I say manual, I mean full manual operation. Also if you find a setting you like you can save it and recall it at anytime! It has a bracket mode that takes 3 pictures each time you shoot and a burst mode. It also does movies, however they lack sound.

I use NiMH batteries and the average battery use is very, very good. I am getting about 520 standard images per charge. The image quality is excellent and the jpeg compression leaves few artifacts. For the purist in me a wish it saved to “raw” tiff too.

My wife who is photographically challenged, was able to pick-up the Z10 , turn it on and rattle off 200 pictures, many of them very good. So if you want to extend your photography, look no further than the Z10. I think I can safely say there is not a camera at twice the price that will come close to this puppy from Konica-Minolta.

PS: The red eye actually works 95% of the time. The flash goes off twice before the shutter flash!
