Setting out to do for co-op gaming what Counter-Strike did for team combat, Left 4 Dead is an ambitious survival horror game. Running on the Source engine, Left 4 Dead leaves four armed survivors of a world overrun with zombies, and they must fight their way out to escape the outbreak. Designed for co-op play, the four players must work together to finish each stage of the game, lending each other artillery support, sharing ammo and rescuing each other when zombies are on top of them. In addition to the standard four players as humans, another four players can be amongst the masses of assaulting zombies, seeking to take down the other players. Zombie players might even find themselves become one of the four mutant "boss" zombies, who have unique powers that can be used to devastate, injure, tie up, mark and track, confuse, or even humiliate the gun-toting human survivors. Left 4 Dead is Right

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Great game concept, unexhaustable replay, and zombies.

Cons: No 4 player co-op

The Bottom Line:
For a taste of playing a game like a movie it does not get any better than this.

Author's Review
After buying several "must have" games and being able to refer to them using the phrase "This reminds me a lot of (fill in the blank)" it is refreshing to see a new twist on a FSP (First person shooter) game.  As a big fan of Halo 1, 2, & 3 and Resident Evil 4 this game is a perfect mix of both.

The premise is simple.  You and three others are stuck in various environments needing to shoot your way out of a mass of zombies.  You'd think this game would get boring quick, but it has a replay value on par with the Halo series of games.  Each time you play it is is different enough to keep you coming back.

Louis, Bill, Francis, & Zoey are the 4 unfortunate souls who must join together and fight their way out of cities, forests, and other sites.  You can arm yourself with a pistol or a 2nd weapon of choice (shotgun, machine gun, or sniper rifle).  You can also add another pistol to your hands so you can duel wield.  Once you leave the safe room, you are then subject to the various zombies.  The Horde is the first group of zombies you will face and they come in all kinds of varieties.  They attack quickly, so get the thoughts of the slow stalking zombie movies out of your head.  To add to your troubles, big fat zombies known as "Boomers" come around spewing green glop on you that attracts the horde.  Shoot them ASAP or be blinded by their green glop and get attacked by the horde.  "Hunters" are the next zombie to look out for.  They jump on you and try to rip you assunder.  Only a teammate can knock them off you.  "Smokers" hide in the darkness and wait for one of the four to seperate from the pack so they can grab you with their cameleon like toungues and pull you away.  Again, a teammate must rescue you.  "Tanks", hugely muscled zombies, attack every once in awhile and when they do they are hard to kill and do a lot of damage.  One hit from them and you could need to be revived by your teammates.  Finally, if you hear crying, turn off your flash light and keep quiet.  A "Witch" is nearby and if you startle her, she is just as deadly as a Hunter but a lot harder to kill.

So, do you think you are ready to play?

The scenary and music blend well with the game and make it truly "Hollywood Movie-esque" You feel like you are in those bad B-movies.  If you are downed, your teammates can revive you and pain pills or a med kit can give you your health back.

This game, as I am finding out most Xbox 360 games, can only truly be used to it's full potential when Xbox Live is used.  It is not the same playing with 2 people (you and one guest) when you can play with 4 friends.  You will need two 360's and two Xbox Live accounts, but if you can get the crew online, it makes the game a lot more fun.

The AI in the game is brilliant and the two players that the computer controls when you play in co-op are pretty decent helping you and staying close.  4 player is it, and I wish Valve, who made the game, made it for a 4 player co-op but they did not.  The only real complaint I would have with the game.

The 5 levels are not a whole lot either, but the replay value more than makes up for it.  Hopefully at some point new levels will be available on Xbox Live to buy and download.

I have not really been this excited to play a game since Halo 3 came out.
