Bought refurb Version 1, overheating causes dropped connections.

Author's Rating: Rating: 1/5 stars

Pros: It was fun putting it in the fridge to see if it would stop overheating

Cons: Does not work.

The Bottom Line:
Avoid this product, but if you have to get it make sure it is version 2.  DO NOT BUY VERSION 1.

When you read the specs on the router it seems like a great product.  Maybe if Linksys got it right it would be.   The problem is it overheats, and when it overheats it drops the connection.  IMO the overheating is due to using cheap parts, not using heat sinks, and packing everything inside the weird case it comes in.

Price:  I paid $65 inc shipping for a refubished unit.   I do not advise buying a refub Linksys product.

Installation:  The installation when poorly possibly do to the overheating issue.  I was on Linksys live chat constantly burning through hours trying to set the thing up to work with a cable modem.   The overheating issue causes random strange problems that screws up everything.

Performance:   Obviously poor.   I did some experiments.  I put it in the fridge for an hour and then ran it with a cold pack on top of it.  That fixed the problem.  It runs minimally acceptably if you prop it up about 4 inchs so air can circulate around it.

Mistakes:  First I bought a refurb, you always take chances doing that.  Second, I did not research it so I did not realize there were 2 versions, I got the older one.  Prehaps the Version 2 is better than the Version 1 I bought.

Advice:  Avoid WRT610N in general.  If you must atleast make sure it is Version 2.

Especially annoying:  The weird design of the case makes it impossible to set it up so it stands on end, like the rectangular routers from Netgear and others do.  Because it lays flat on a surface it cannot disapate the heat trapped under it.  REALLY BAD DESIGN.

Who should get this?:  Only people that intend to use it in a room with airconditioning.
