The Linksys WRT54GL Wireless Router has tools and power to network every device in your home with ease. In fact, it’s actually three devices in one. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect both screaming fast Wireless-G (802.11g at 54Mbps) and Wireless-B (802.11b at 11Mbps) devices to the network. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. Connect four PCs directly, or attach more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection making the WRT54GL a simple solution for complete home and office networking.

Pros: Easy to set up, reliable, versatile, and affordable.
Cons: None
The Bottom Line:
An affordable solution for home and small office networking.
I finally convinced my parents to join the digital age, so upon building computers for them I had to start looking for a network card in order to share the DSL connection. After much researching along with the advice of some friends, I purchased the WRT54GL router to set up my home network.
*** INSTALLATION AND SETUP ***
Installation is easier than I expected. You only have to set it up once using the software that comes on the CDROM. You can set up a login and password so that only you can make changes to the configuration.
I used Cat5e Ethernet cables for my setup. Although the WRT54GL has wirelesss capability, I decided to go with cables because wireless devices have frequently given trouble in my area. The WRT54GL has the ability to connect up to four computers through the local area network, which is quite sufficient.
*** VERSATILITY ***
The WRT54GL operates as a DHCP server for the network, which means older systems can make use of DSL (which often only uses the PPPoe protocol). Since most of my computers are still running Windows for Workgroups 3.11, this was a godsend.
Advanced configuration is possible through a web browser by entering your root IP as the address.
*** PERFORMANCE AND RELIABILITY ***
After a month of constant operation I have not had any problems whatsoever with the WRT54GL. I have not experienced any slowdowns when browsing or playing games online. In short, this can be described as "setup then forget." It also comes with its own SPI firewall.
*** MY OVERALL OPINION ***
I would recommend this router to anyone who wants to set up a home network to share files, printers, and/or and internet connection easily and affordable.
Lastly, for something like this, I recommend you purchase it new from a store like Staples or CompUSA. This is a very popular router and is almost invariably in stock.
