Author's Review
Well, after my awful experience with the Altec Lansing AHS 423 Headset, previously reported on Epinions, I’m happy to report that I’ve found a more than formidable replacement. Surprisingly, I didn’t even plan it that way.

I originally purchased the Logitech ClearChat Pro USB Headset (listed by Epinions as Logitech 98-0000-10 Headset) for my wife Jenny, as a replacement for her desk-mounted microphone. But, it didn’t really work out for her, so she passed it off to me. I couldn’t have been more pleased ever since.

What’s in the Box?

The Logitech ClearChat Pro USB Headset ships as a complete unit, requiring no additional assembly or software uploads to work. It’s basically “plug-and-play”, compatible with Windows XP, and Vista, and Mac OSx. All you need is a free USB port on your PC and you’re ready to go.

The Look, Feel, and Operation

The Logitech ClearChat is a sleek, light, black unit. It fits comfortably on top of the head, like most traditional headsets. The unit is fully adjustable and able to conform to any size cranium. Although the ear-cushions on this particular headset don’t fit completely “over the ears” like high-end professional models, they are big, soft, and very comfortable. They are also offer more than sufficient insulation from exterior noise, while keeping whatever you are listening to entirely personal. The USB cable is eight feet in length, allowing you to roam around a little if necessary.

One thing I’ve noticed about headsets is that, generally, each ear is “proprietary”—that is, left must fit on left ear and right on right. This headset is no different, but, thankfully, Logitech clearly marked “L” and “R” on the proper sides to make donning the device easy, and less embarrassing!

Volume, mute, and microphone are all controlled via switches located on the outside of the right ear cup. A unique three way toggle on the side allows you to activate or mute the mike, or optimize for game play. Likewise, volume can be adjusted by pressing on either the top or bottom of the ear cup.

A boom microphone assembly is attached to the left ear cup. It’s light, ergonomic and freely swivels up and down to allow for comfort. When muted, the end of the mike emits a soft red glow. During use, the microphone is more than adequate. I’ve made several calls to the United States via Skype and this headset and folks on the other end have no problems hearing me.

Final Thoughts

The Logitech ClearChat Pro USB Headset is a clear winner in my opinion. It’s comfortable, light and made to conform to personal taste. The ear cushions offer enough insulation to ensure privacy, while the microphone is sensitive enough to make your intentions clear, whether they are over a VOIP phone call, or an online gaming session. Overall, it's a top product that’s worth the price.
