The Bottom Line:
One of the safest infant seats available in the WORLD. It has a high weight capacity and easy to use.
We bought the Maxi-Cosi Cabriofix after doing extensive research on both American and International carseat safety by each country's testing standards. Unfortunately, American testing standards fall far from most European standards so we went with the Maxi-Cosi. We purchased the seat from the Netherlands and thankfully have not yet been in an accident.
The seat is made of ABS plastic for the shell. It has four large bolstered and padded wings that surround the baby which provides the side impact protection. There are two next the the head and two next to the legs. The harness system utilizes only 3 straps and has a one button quick tighten and loosen function. The seat capacity is for infants up to 15 kilograms (28 pounds). This is actually much more than many seats available in the United States that are also travel system compatible. Despite the high weight capacity, the seat is quite sleek in shape. It is sporty and has a great European style that can't be found in the current bulky US offerings.
Our baby is extremely comfortable in the seat. It comes with a removable cushion infant back rest and head stabilizer so that as a newborn, he can lay in the seat fairly flat and keep his head midline. The material of the seat is cloth and easy to remove and clean. The cloth hide-away canopy is ingenious, and it provides decent sun coverage. The seat also has a small storage compartment to keep things like the mosquito nets, pacifiers, etc. Best yet, the Cabriofix comes with an in car base that has a stabilizer bar (Isofix) which helps to make the whole system extremely stable with or without Latch. The base is also quite heavy and once fixed in place it does not move. Unlike other car seat bases, where the car seat and base still tends to slide despite having a "certified installer" placing them, the Cabriofix with isofix base is extremely stable and fixed.
We also chose the Cabriofix because it seemlessly fits onto our Bugaboo Cameleon with two small locking adapters which we also ordered from the Netherlands. Lastly, the colors available for the Cabriofix are much more modern. We purchased the one in Puntino.
Our only concern when buying the seat was the three point harness. But, after doing extensive research in looking at the statistics between three and five point harness crash safety, we could not find any differences. The large side bolsters also prevent "slipping out" the arm straps.
We currently learned that Maxi-Cosi is coming to the US!! They are bringing over the Cabrio and not the Cabriofix unfortunately and renaming it the Mico.
