A Unique Title, But Not Well Developed
| Author's Rating: |
|
Pros: Unique Style, Interesting Premise, Cool Topic
Cons: Clumsy Control Scheme, Bad Combat, Gameplay Issues
The Bottom Line:
This game was unique and definitely had a cool premise and idea behind it, but it just isn't there yet for being fun and accessible.
Mirror's Edge has one big thing going for it that makes sure it isn't a truly bad title, and that is the fact that it is truly something unique. This type of game has never been made before, and that earns it quite a few points for style. But it also has many issues in-game that kept it from really being an enjoyable title for me.
The premise of the game is that you live in an oppressive world where information is something that is sold and treated as a commodity. You are a free-runner that runs the rooftops of the city taking information around to sell. This is illegal and so, consequently, the authorities are always after you. But a good story stems off from this. I won't go off into describing the story, as this is one of the few good things about this game, and I don't want to ruin it.
Different gamers will have different opinions about this, but I thought that the control scheme was fairly clumsy. I also thought that the combat was not well developed at all and it felt like a clumsy last minute add-on. The game only really comes into its own and becomes enjoyable when you can manage to get into nice chains of free running. Unfortunately, this is painfully infrequently. It is excessively difficult to get a good chain going. One of the reasons for this is that many times during the game you don't really know where exactly you have to go. This is my biggest issue with the game. In a large number of the levels, you get stuck because you have no idea of where the game wants you to go. This just completely ruins the flow of the game and takes the fun out of it. You will get very frustrated at points.
The graphics are, just like the rest of the game, unique. This can be a good thing, but it can get old at points. The same colors are used repeatedly and it makes the visuals start to bore you after playing for a while. Also, the cutscene animations weren't very good for me. But this, again, depends on your style preferences.
Above all, Mirror's Edge is an interesting game. This is because of its unique style and genre. But it just wasn't there in terms of gameplay and being fun. After all, that is the main point of a game, isn't it?
