The COOLPIX S570 is equipped with Nikon's Smart Portrait System, a series of advanced functions that help produce consistently great portraits. The Skin Softening function automatically detects and analyzes the subject's skin and then adjusts smoothness for enhanced results. Face-priority AF automatically detects as many as 12 faces in the shot and helps produce satisfying portraits by adjusting focus and exposure. Smile Timer automatically releases the shutter when the priority subject smiles while the Blink Proof function automatically shoots two sequential frames and saves the one in which the subject's eyes are wide open. In-Camera Red-Eye Fix automatically corrects any perceived red-eye effect before saving the image to memory.

Pros: Camera start up/power up, compact size, great images, quick recharge
Cons: no optical viewfinder, shot-shot time, battery out to charge
The Bottom Line:
I would recommend this camera to most people who don't need short shot-shot times.
I purchased this compact camera for the following features: small size and 5x optical zoom. This unit is to replace a Kodak Z730; this new unit had to produce stills at least as well and preferably better video, too. We also purchased a Kodak M381 because after using the Nikon S570 for a day, I found the menus difficult to navigate without needed to further study the extensive user's manual. Being a veteran Kodak user, I thought I'd give the Kodak M381 a try (please see that review for details on that camera).
General use: I'm still trying out all of the S570's features, but find that I'm using Auto mode the most. I'm generally taking pictures of my children so I usually don't have time to set modes. Still photos have been quite clear and crisp. The auto ISO selection has been accurate enough to capture my daughter coming down a slide without blur. Video 640x480 30 fps was clear using indoor flourescent lighting.
I generally like having an optical view finder, but cameras of this class do not often feature one. Using the camera to capture my children in action means I need a camera that can focus quickly and retake shots immediately. While I found the S570 to be a little slow, it wasn't intolerable. Depending upon your needs, you may not find its shot-to-shot time a variable.
I found the menus difficult to navigate. Yes, it has many photo setting and features. One can control many of the exposure profiles; however, I want a point-and-shoot camera that also takes high definition pictures. It's version of smart-capture seems to work well although I haven't used the camera in many varied lighting conditions.
Summary:What I love: accurate settings in auto, smooth video images, small size, less than 100 minute recharge, small compact size.
What I hate: difficult to navigate menus, lack of optical viewfinder, long shot-shot times, I have to take the battery out to charge it.
