A great great camera, handles and shoots superbly, wonderful viewfinder and screen.

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Bright screen, terrific sensor, the best all around handling. A joy.

Cons: None, really, unless you want a full autofocus video camera.

The Bottom Line:
Fast, bright, high high quality, solid without being too heavy, brilliantly balanced and smart. A winner through and through.

It's not a D3, thank God (the D3 is an amazing camera, but a tank to carry). And it's not a D5000, thank you everyone (the D5000 has a great sensor but is a big awkward to use, once you are used to better).
The D90 might due for an update soon, but in terms of HANDLING and IMAGE QUALITY it's really perfect, and won't be outdated for years and years. I've looked through the viewfinder of the entry level cameras (Canon, too) and they're embarrassing, like looking through a tunnel. Someone please remember the beauty of an OM-1 viewfinder, unmatched, and necessary!
But the D90 is big and bright, and not bad in the digital realm. The sensor is great. All you need is a great lens to top it off. I skipped the kit lens and use a brighter wide zoom and love it. Easier to see and focus, and sharper all around. Video? Nice, but my LX-3 is equivalent, or better (f/2.0) and it autofocuses while shooting, which the D90 does not. You don't always need it, but often you do! Anyway, I love it for what it does do best.
COMPARISON: the Canon Rebel series (it has many forms) is really similar to the D3000, D5000, and the early D40 and D60 Nikons. To get up to a D90 level you are talking about a Canon 50D. However, I would check out the T2i Canon as an alternative. It's mostly going to be an issue of how they feel (this is what makes you use your camera naturally). If you look upwards to a D300, you'll get a D90 in a heavier version, a bit faster and better built, but I"m not sure most people need that. Sony and Pentax and Olympus all have good (very good) comparables, but if you want full compatibility with a big system, and with Sigma and Tokina lenses, you'll want to stick with Nikon or Canon. And you won't go wrong.
In the end, I bought the D90, and have ZERO regrets. A total joy to use.
