Pros: Price is low for a lens that covers this range.

Cons: It has ED glass but it doesn't pay off

The Bottom Line:
Nikon is pushing cheap consumer lens that just don't make the grade.

I just shot a roll of fuji reala through my F-5 using this lens. I have to say I'm VERY unhappy. I looked forward to the ED glass giving me sharp contrasty photos. It failed in both categories. Not only was it not sharp (I used a heavy tripod) but the contrast just wasn't there. I actually got better more contrasty photo's using my 50-300 AI Nikkor Auto (Pre-ED Version) I have to admit the 50-300 is a great lens though. The 50-300 ED is even better. Anyway, I have always looked to Nikon to put out the best lens. I guess the competition from Tamron and the other lens makers has made them re-examine their marketing. Shame on you Nikon. You should make better lens and they should cost more, because the quality is there. I would never expect to by a Tamron and think it will give me Nikon quality!

In this case I'm wrong Nikon has sold it's soul to make a cheap consumer lens.

My advice is to buy the older 70-210 5.6 D lens. It delivers the goods for less.
