Good flash, but may not be worth an upgrade from a sb-800

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Battery life seems to be improved, better control interface, same SB-800 quality.

Cons: Larger than the SB-800, uses different color filters than the SB-800.

The Bottom Line:
If you have a SB-800, you may not want to upgrade. But if you have disposable funds or no flash at all, the SB-900 is a great choice.

I purchased this flash upgrade because I had the funds to do so, it was not a necessity upgrade.
Upon opening the box to my SB-900 flash, I noticed two things.1) It was larger than the SB-8002) It had thinner plastic and somewhat of a 'cheap' feel/look
After my initial impressions, I familiarized myself with the control interface. Anyone that is use to the SB-600/800 interface will need to learn the new layout. Some key changes are:-4way navigation pad has been replaced by a scroll wheel-On/off toggle button is now a physical 4way switch-3 additional control buttons
The setup menu was also improved. They went from a large 2x2 icon type menu to a smaller 1x4 text/icon menu with scroll bar. You can now easily tell how far down in the menu you have scrolled and the scroll wheel allows for much faster scrolling and changes to the settings.
Once I learned the new control layout, I placed the SB-900 on my Nikon D90 and did some test shots in TTL mode. From what I can tell the SB-900 provides the same exact quality and lighting coverage as the SB-800. I confirmed this by doing an A/B test between the two flash units with identical camera settings.
After using the SB-900 for a while, I noticed two key things. The first is the flash does not recharge the capacitor as much - or its just very quiet. Having both flashes next to me, I constantly hear the SB-800 recharge where as the SB-900 is as quiet as could be. The second thing I noticed is the SB-900 does not go through AA batteries as quickly. I'm still on the original batteries I installed and if I was using my SB-800, I would have gone through 2-3 sets already - and that's utilizing the 5th battery capability.
