The SD10 features a 16x optical zoom. You can zoom close to catch dynamic shots of distant objects. And because the zoom is optical, there's limited image degradation. Also, Panasonic's Advanced O.I.S. helps prevent blurring - typically a big concern when shooting with a zoom. This combination of optical zoom and Advanced O.I.S. gives you the ability to take fantastic zoom shots.Panasonic's Advanced O.I.S. helps suppress the effects of hand-shake as you shoot, for both motion and still images. This system uses gyro-sensors to detect even tiny amounts of hand-shake, then shifts a lens and adjusts the optical axis to compensate - all at an astounding 4,000 times per second. Because the system is optical, there's only minimal loss of image quality even when viewed on a large-screen TV. In addition, to shoot high-resolution still images, the normal O.I.S. mode 1 is joined by an O.I.S. mode 2, which has a higher stabilization capability. The O.I.S.

Ultra Compact Full-HD Camcorder
| Author's Rating: |
|
Pros: Full HD
Compact Design
High Zoom
Image Stabilizers
Cons: Small battery capacity
no internal memory
The Bottom Line:
All in all a great camcorder with very good picture performance. You can take it just about everywhere, because of how compact it is.
I have some previous experience with other similar camcorders including the Praktica DVC 5.1, Aiptek AHD Z600, Panasonic SDR-S26 and Canon HF10 but only for testing purposes. In comparison to the other camcorders here are my conclusions after using it for a few weeks.
PROS:
+ Very good price / performance ratio
+ Very small and portable, it can be carried around just about anywhere
+ Full HD (up to 17Mbit / s), very good subjective image quality in good to moderate lighting, in dim light, I have not tested it yet
+ Useful + 2.1 MP photos, even in the current video mode
+ Built-in flash and video LED lamp
+ Image stabilizers, several stabilization modes
+ Very good 16x optical zoom (approx 44m-704mm)
(I recommend an aftermarket wide angle lens, I use a shortened Raynox HD 5050 Pro which works perfectly with the SD10 and the 44mm to 22mm of focal length) +30.5 mm filter thread for filters or converter
+ Separate charging unit and main power adapter included
+ Very good automation and configuration options, very straightforward, easy to use by all
+ All the buttons are within easy reach, good touch-screen menu system
+ Pre-Rec function
+ Good stereo sound, microphones can be controlled manually, zoom feature and audio wind filter
CONS:
-No external accessories such as lights, microphones, etc.
-Standard battery is only good for about 60 min of HD recording therefore a second battery is required
-No internal flash memory (as seen manual but there is a twin model HDC-TM10 with 8Gb internal memory)
-Narrow strap-something was better at SDR-S26
-Lens protection covers don not open automatically when you turn the device on
-No real wide angle (starts at 44mm, based on KB file)
Final Words
All in all a great camcorder with very good picture performance. You can take it just about everywhere, because of how compact it is, but still looks like a toy. However, its small size means that it has its compromises, especially in regards to accessories and battery capacity. Overall this is a great amateur camcorder with Full HD picture in a compact size. The Panasonic HDC-SD10 has served me well served and I will remain loyal to the brand!
