The Philips CD4451S Digital Cordless Phone with Answering Machine puts the emotion back into a call. High Definition sound brings people and their feelings closer together. Enjoy high quality conversation, with a level of clarity rarely heard before. Thanks to a high-quality speaker and to a real acoustic chamber, the audio spectrum reaches far beyond what's normally heard on a telephone. Handsfree mode uses a built-in loud speaker to amplify the voice of the caller, allowing you to speak and listen during a call without holding the phone to your ear. This is especially useful if you want to share the call with others or take notes during a call. Minimize

Not as good as I expect from Philips

Author's Rating: Rating: 1/5 stars

Pros: Comfortable handset, strong signal, easy to set up, good sound quality

Cons: bad battery life, annoying call light, limited ring tones

The Bottom Line:
Don't buy it unless you can live with the call light problem, the lack of acknowledgement of a second extension picking up the phone and the battery issues.

I use this phone every day for my business. I purchased it after having issues with another phone I had and not finding a corded phone with a cordless option that included the features I needed. I decided on this one because of the size of the handset, the 6.0 frequency and the Philips name as well as it had the answering machine I needed.

I like the blue screen but the dark blue letters aren't a great idea on that background. I like the fact that I can push one button to turn off or on the ringer. I like the sound quality as well as the range. I like the size but it's a bit small. The answering machine is nice and works well. Other phones I've had will cut people off in mid-sentence but this one has not, yet.

If left off the base for any longer than a few hours the battery indicator loses one bar. Any longer and the phone dies then shuts off. If left on charge for more than a few hours the batteries get very warm - not what I expect or want. The caller ID shows number when someone calls but not name. When scrolling back to caller ID history it shows name only, not number. To get number you have to dial it. The play button for the answering machine is on the top of the base which can be hit sometimes when placing the handset back into the charger and this is annoying. The ringtones are limited and not that pleasing.

Things I really hate: I have a corded base 4 line phone that I mostly use. If I forget to turn the ringer off on the Philips and answer the corded phone, the ringer on the cordless still rings even though I've answered the call. It continues to ring 4 or 5 times before stopping. If I answer a call on my corded phone just the moment the Philips is answering the call with the answering machine, the outgoing message continues to play. The Philips phone does not recognize that the line has been picked up elsewhere so it must think it's the only phone on the entire line. If I miss a call there's a red light on the handset next to the earpiece that blinks. It's one thing if I was out of the office but it's another if I pick up the call on another extension. The light will blink constantly until I hit the CID button, then OK, then END. I've contacted Philips about this but there is no way to change it.

The buttons show no sign of wear like other phone I've had which the numbers wear off completely. The speakerphone feature is nice but I don't use it.

I check out items before I buy them but since this phone was brand new on the market when I bought it, I guess I learned my lesson. If I could find another cordless phone with an answering machine that was on the 6.0 frequency but didn't have an ugly or large handset, this Philips would be in the trash.
