Another Winner from Plantronics

Author's Rating: Rating: 4/5 stars

Pros: Long Battery life, distinct power on-off chime, nice design, snug fit over ear.

Cons: Sound is too low coming through earpiece. Five-second delay before it connects with phone.

The Bottom Line:
In the final analysis, if you're looking for a decent headset without any unnecessary bells and whistles, I highly recommend the 520 (or the 330).

I bought this headset on April 4, 2008 when I went to a local Verizon store to buy a Plantronics 330 for my wife (I already have for myself). California’s mandatory hands free driving law goes into effect in July 2008, so I thought that my wife should get used to using a Bluetooth headset as soon as possible.

The Verizon store was sold out of the 330, so I decided to buy the 520 when the customer service rep offered me a discount on the price. The originally price is $69.99, but I got it for $56.56 after tax. The 520 is virtually identical to the 330, with the exception of the external design of the casing, and the power on/off chime that you hear through the ear piece, which is an improvement over the 330.

I have been using the Plantronics 330 and 650E since Nov 2007 and I think that the 330 is a good, dependable basic headset, which is the reason that I wanted to buy another one. The sound quality of the 330 and 520 is good on both ends, and the volume control/power on-off button is easy to manipulate. It also fits snugly over your ear with an earpiece that goes directly into the ear canal (as do all Plantronics headsets). This is definitely an improvement over the loose-fitting Motorola headsets that flop all over your ear whenever you turn your head. The 520 also has long battery life. I can usually go a week using about 15 minutes of talk time per day, and about 30 minutes a day of standby time (power on but headset not being used) before I have to recharge it.

On the downside, however, the sound that comes through the earpiece of the 520 is a bit lower than that of the 330. I occasionally have to set the volume all the way up to make it loud enough to hear the person on the other end. However, the sound that comes in through the 330 earpiece is a bit louder, so I don't have this problem with the 330.

Another thing that I find somewhat annoying with the 520 is the 5-second delay before the headset connects with the phone after I turn on the headset.
