Samsung P2370HD turns on and off randomly
| Author's Rating: |

Pros: Solve the problem of random turn-on and turn-off with a battery back-up.
Cons: The problem is widespread with Samsungs. Get a battery backup or return the unit.
The Bottom Line:
Avoid this and other Samsungs with this problem unless you plan to have it plugged into a battery backup. My searching indicates Samsung is not acknowledging the problem.
In this review, I want to focus on one particular problem with the TV, the fact that it will randomly turn on and off, most often in the middle of the night. There are many other reviews to be found on the quality and longevity of this set, and there are a lot of complaints about this particular problem. No one has reported a solution, but I believe I found it. We have Verizon FiOS TV, with the Set Top Box connected to the TV through the antenna input. Both the TV and the STB are plugged into a wall receptacle in our bedroom. The TV would turn on several times a night, but since the STB was off, there would be no program, just a message on the screen from the Verizon STB to turn the TV off. Sometimes the turn-on chime of the TV would wake me up and I'd get up and turn it off. Other times, I ignored it, and later the TV would turn off by itself. Sometimes the TV would turn on several times a night, other times it would not turn on at all, indicating the random nature of the problem. I tried a surge protector on the line, and it didn't help. Finally, I bought a small battery backup unit, with enough current capability to power both the STB and the TV for several minutes. Since I installed the battery backup several weeks ago, the TV has not turned itself on or off.
I believe that at night, the power company is making adjustments to the power grid and the momentary drop-outs that normally don't affect appliances and other electronics, caused the capacitive turn on switch of the TV to act as if it was triggered. A surge protector prevents over-voltage, but the battery backup fills in for a voltage drop-out, which IMHO is the source of the problem. And now my TV and STB are protected from electrical damage from a storm.
