It's OK

Author's Rating: Rating: 3/5 stars

Pros: Plays Blu Ray well and good Internet connections - especially good for Netflix streaming!

Cons: Its a lightweight unit - I worry about durability.

The Bottom Line:
The Samsung BluRay has a great playback picture. It's a low end, entry-level unit. Compelling feature was the Internet connection - Netflix works great! Worry about durability - it's light.

Author's Review
I have some caveats to make in this review. Primarily, we got this unit for free when we purchased a Samsung 52" flatscreen LCD TV. So we have little invested in choosing this unit. In reading reviews, this appears to be an entry level, older Blu Ray player.

We got this unit at Christmas 2009 and have been running it about a month. We also had a Sony Playstation 3 on the system to play Blu Ray discs.

So how do we like it? - It's OK, especially for something that's a freebie. The Blu Ray discs play well and the picture is what you would expect - spectacular! I worry about a noise it makes as it starts up - a funny, rumbly noise as the disc drive cranks up.It only happens when it first starts - the reminder of the time it is quiet and appears to run smoothly.

What I do love is the Internet connectivity. We plugged a ethernet cable to it and we can easily get the Netflix Instant Queue. The selected features from Netflix run smoothly and look great. If you had a marginal Internet connection I suspect the playback would be choppy as it buffers - we have seen none of that over our DSL connection. It compares well to the PS3 - and without the PS3's terrible remote controls.

There are also preset connections to Blockbuster video, Pandora Radio and You Tube. We have become fans of the Pandora Internet Radio. (you select a few artist that you enjoy and it builds a radio station with their music and other similar artists. It works very well.)

I should mention that you can work wirelessly with the purchase of an additional module to connect the Samsung unit to your WiFi network. You can't browse with it and you can't get Hulu.com to watch - just those four presents. If you have a Netflix account - it's great!

The review says I paid $150 for it (but did not) - but the Epinons form won't let you pay $0 for anything. So - $150 is about the price being asked around,  :).
