samsung bd-p1600 Disney upgrade
| Author's Rating: |
|
Pros: Works for me (now), although I don't connect it to the internet.
Cons: Samsung didn't really help me with their upgrade guide.
The Bottom Line:
Works OK, but the upgrade guide doesn't list the most important step. Rebooting (i.e. unplug it for a while).
I received this blu-ray player as part of a package deal back in August 2009, with a Samsung 6400 series LED TV and a soundbar/wireless woofer. I've had my issues with slow startup, but only recently have I found Blu-Ray's, expecially Disney, that don't even load. So I went to the Samsung website, and downloaded the BEv2.16_110310_BDP1600_XAA.RUF, upgrade, which was actually a .zip file which then had to be unzipped and copied to a USB drive, and also the guide for upload with the USB drive. I uploaded to the player, as directed, using onscreen TV prompts (took about 10 minutes) and the player turned itself OFF as it was supposed to when finished. I then put in the Disney movie, again, and it froze, again, on the opening Disney castle.
What I found out later, reading many online comments (not nice) is that I needed to also UNPLUG the player, and let it sit (one comment said for at least 20 minutes). I did that, overnight in fact. Next morning, the movie loaded just fine and it's playing just fine now.
Samsung really needs to add this little unplug step to thier guide. It probably doesn't need to sit overnight, but I do work with some electronics that need to be completely turned off for a while after upgrading, supposedly to clear any volatile memory. That's probably what happens here.
So if you're having problems with Disney blu-rays on this player, then try that little extra step, after the upgrade. It might actually fix the problem. It did for me.
I'd probably not buy this brand again. I like the Sony BDP-BX37 player I got from the eBay seller, businessauctionsinc. It only cost me $60 and they have lots more for sale/bid.
