Quite the Awesome Notebook Mouse

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Very comfortable, slick design, a dizzying array of fully customizable buttons

Cons: Exorbitant cost, SetPoint software doesn't always recognize mouse

The Bottom Line:
Though expensive, this mouse is very advanced and well worth the cost. This mouse is particularly well-geared for photoshop addicts, hardcore web surfers, and even laptop gamers. An inspired choice.

Author's Review
Prior to buying the VX Revolution, I used a Logitech Marble Mouse with my Dell notebook, which worked extremely well, but was rather unportable. If I were to bring the trackball with me to the coffeeshop, for example, the ball would at best be lost in my bag while in transit, or at worse would roll out of my bag, pick up dents in the ball from the fall, and wouldn't work afterwards (this has happened before). I needed something portable.

Upon receiving my first paycheck, I went down to my local CompUSA and bought this mouse. First of all, it was exorbitantly expensive. I had read the rave reviews about Laser being the equivalent of sliced bread in the peripheral world, but having been sufficiently impressed with optical years before, i was skeptical.

After plugging the receiver into my Dell laptop, booting up, and installing the SetPoint software, I was very very impressed with the tracking accuracy, and the plethora of functions the mouse could take over. I use the "push down wheel" button for quick switch, the "search" button for Minimize all/show desktop, and the zoom in/out for cruise control scrolling up and down. I left the back/forward buttons alone. With these functions, I often never have to take my hands off the mouse (which conforms to the hand and is extremely comfortable) while checking my RSS newsfeeds, surfing the web, or playing with photos in Photoshop.

My only niggle with this awesome device, besides its cost, is mostly related to notebook computer users. On many occasions, if I hibernate my computer without the mouse plugged in, start up again, and plug the mouse in, the SetPoint software will not recognize the VX, but only Windows will. This means that the mouse works as a mouse just fine, but all the other functions do not work with my custom settings. The only remedy to this is to reboot my computer.
