Pros: Fun Simpsons Characters, Some Brutal Moves, Itchy & Scratchy Fight!
Cons: Ned Flanders just won't die! Too easy to beat the game with a little effort
The Bottom Line:
Great fun for a group of friends who have gathered for a party or a game night. Single player value decreases rapidly after the game is beat.
I am not the biggest fan of wrestling but when I saw this game come out, I just knew I had to try it. I mean, who doesn't love the Simpsons? So many of the characters are represented and with lot of skill levels I thought this was sure to be a game to last me a long time. Sadly I was mistaken. With a little effort this game was beaten in ONE day. Yep, that's right. All three levels, all those fights, ONE day.
The characters are loads of fun, each with a cool move that can be disturbing to say the least. Lisa Simpson chomping on someone's arm isn't the prettiest sight. Groundskeeper Willie using a rake to clobber people is a bit much. But all in good Simpsons-style fun. And as usual, Ned Flanders is a nightmare that just won't go away.
The play is rather simple. Not as many combo moves as other fighting games, which reduced the challenge. Working upwards in the levels you can earn other characters (Flanders is the best to use since he has to be pinned down twice in each round to be beat). Some of the challengers are a bit difficult, but nothing that can't be mastered with a few practice tries.
The graphics are fun. It's neat seeing the simpsons in 3D as opposed to their usual 2 dimensions. Also the arenas are great fun. My favorite is the Itchy and Scratchy fight where you are fighting inside a TV and you can see Lisa and Bart watching you from the outside. Very creative.
The sound on this game is pretty average. Your typical grunts and groans when being beaten in (with the exception of Flanders who says "Thank you kindly" as you beat him to a pulp) and some cool music to boot. Nothing to complain about, but nothing to rave about either.
There is only one basic cheat in this game. It's a fun one, unlocking the Bonus Match Up without having to beat the game. The Bonus Match Up is where all the fun with friends is to be had. I bet you want to know the cheat right? On the PRESS START screen press circle, up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right. You should hear a DING DING and then press start. The Bonus Match Up will be unlocked.
The game itself is good and has its merits. It's great fun to play in a group atmosphere where working your way up the ranks isn't important. It's a fun party game, especially for twenty-somethings who have had a drink or two (not that I condone drinking, mind you).
The worst aspect of this game is single player replay value. Once you've beat the game it can be quite boring afterwards. Most of the challenge is gone. Then you play each of the characters to see what they are like and after that, well the game is best left to collect dust on the shelf after that point.
I have to give this game an average rating. It's great fun to start so I can't rate it badly based on that, but it hardly hangs in there so I can't rate it too well based on that. A great party game, not much more.
Stick to watching the Simpsons on TV where you can tolerate the obscure and the bizarre. Heidy Ho neighbor!
