Replayability

Cons: Werehog combat can get repetitive

The Bottom Line:

It's different, but Sonic Unleashed is still a great pickup for Sonic fans.

Let's get straight to the point: You want to know if this game is any good because Sonic turns in to a werehog. The quick answer is "yes," but die-hard Sonic-style fans will not be as satisfied.

The levels as Sonic the Hedgehog are extremely fast and bring the hedgehog back to his roots: SPEED. Quick reflexes and decision making are also important, especially on the later levels, if you want to make it through unscratched. The levels are also beautiful and incredibly detailed; no doubt one of the best games I have ever seen graphic-wise. These day-time levels are what make Sonic games fun.

The night levels as Sonic the Werehog are... different. They are much slower and really focus on platforming and combat. While this isn't a bad thing, this is probably not what you would expect when playing a Sonic game. The controls are fine, they are just a little more "complex" than the day stages. Once you get use to them you shouldn't have any issues.

The combat can get a bit repetitive at times, but as you go the enemies will get tougher and you will level up and acquire new combos/moves to keep things interesting. Once you actually get use to the werehog you will realize this part of the game is actually pretty decent. Bottom line is that it is DIFFERENT than traditional Sonic games, but overall the werehog is still pretty fun. Still, fans wanting nothing but Sonic-speed action will only play these levels to get to the next day stage.

The music is absolutely fantastic throughout the game as well. Each track really seems to fit in perfectly with the different stages and places in the world.

Once you complete the game there is also plenty to keep you busy. If you want to get all of the artwork, videos, and music, you will need to complete many side-quests and missions. Items are also located throughout every level, and let's not forget obtaining all S-ranks!
