Good effort vs. Canon
| Author's Rating: |
|
Pros: Good design, fine photos, good HD video, helpful features
Cons: Sub-par battery life, expensive, lag time between shots (occasionally)
The Bottom Line:
Sony has a good effort. I'm picky about gadgets, and am pleased with this purchase. Try out Canon and Sony side by side before purchase.
My wife and I have been Canon fans ever since I bought her the first SD330 camera a few years back. We LOVED that camera. We replaced it with a SD750 we found a deal on and enjoyed it as well. For some reason, the SD750 played out for some reason, so rather than repairing it, we got in the game again.
I owed a Sony as my first digital camera many years ago. It was a great camera with crisp photos and I enjoyed it. My wife liked the style of the T90 and I liked the build quality, so we went for it.
Build
Sony has always had a good build quality, in my opion. This camera is no exception. The sliding mechanism is very solid and the body feels very solid. The screen is nice and vivid and responds ok to touch. My wife uses her nails, so it is very easy for her. The included stylus is useful as well, but not needed most of the time.
Features
12 Megapixels is plenty (overkill some say) for a good resolution. We keep it at 9 MP for size convenience. Photos come out clean and well colored for the most part. It is, of course, no SLR, so you won't get that professional look. Very acceptable for general point and shoot stuff though.
The video was going to be my killer app for this phone. Our old Canon's did well with just 640x480 resolution (they replaced our old Hi8 camcorder), so I was excited to see 720p out of this bad boy. Well, let's just say it's good in outdoor/high light situations. Inside (as with most), it's grainy and not-so-good. Back to the outside - video looks GREAT for the size of the camera. Using the included dock, I can hook up through HDMI to my flat screen and get a decent image quality. In this case, it would not replace an HD stand alone camera (which I don't have, but have used). It is a nice feature though for times when you want to grab a quick clip.
Still Image Features Quick round up
- Face Detection works well for focusing on one or multiple subjects
- Smile detection is pretty cool to shoot when the person smiles
- Smile creation (edit photo) is pretty much a gimmick (funny though)
- Auto exposure actually works well. Auto to night mode, etc.
All menus are touch screen. I can figure them out ok (I'm the nerd). My wife, has some trouble with navigating the menus, but for most operations, figures it out fine.
I do notice quite a lag between photos and focus times from other point-and-shoots I've used. Annoying sometimes when you need to get that shot in quick!
Battery life aint great. Period. Gotta think ahead or get an extra battery.
I also think the price is a bit high for what you get (but, it IS a Sony, so that's a given). In hind sight, we could do just as well or better with a Canon, but feel this one matches up pretty close.
