Sony PRS-505 eBook Reader

Sony PRS-505 eBook Reader

The Reader from Sony is the perfect way to store and read digital books. With enough space for up to 160 eBooks, it has a long battery life and amazing paper-like screen. It’s smaller than the average paper back and easy to use.

Sony PRS505SC (silver) - Great for Readers!

Author's Rating: Rating: 4/5 stars

Pros: Long battery, ePaper display, extra storage, small portable size.

Cons: No backlight, not all .pdf files readable.

The Bottom Line:
I recommend this for those who love to read eBooks or listen to audio books, although you can carry some music on it too.

I received this model, in silver with tan leather cover, as a present. Sewn inside the cover at the corner are small magnets to keep the lid shut. Neat feature.
Although the PRS505 eBook Reader does read .pdf files, that's not it's main function. It's main function is to read eBook files formatted specifically for it. (I believe they're .BBB files, which I think are just .pdf files formatted specifically for it). It also shows .jpg picture files, along with a couple other, but not in color, so don't buy it expecting it to be a picture viewer. It also plays .mp3 files which is nice for audio books. They do make allot of files in the eBook reader format, otherwise, you have to get lucky with .pdf files in general, hoping that they will display good enough.
There are websites that offer eBooks in many different formats, and you should start seeing allot more as the format grows more popular.
The 2 memory card slots are nice, and the screen is easy to read due to the 6 inch E-paper display. The one thing they left out that would have made it allot better is a backlight for the screen, as you can't read in the dark, so you will need a clip on light for that, but they really dropped the ball there.
The screen has a paper like quality to it. It's wild how they do that. It's supposed to make the contrast greater so that it's easier to read, and it works.
So basically, I would recommend this for someone who likes to read books allot, but for someone looking to just read allot of stuff they downloaded from the net, I would say that it's not for them. I think it's a great product, very portable and convenient. I love it.
