Unreal stunned action gamers when it was released, thanks to its lush alien environments, scripted mission events, and over-the-top complement of weapons. It raised the bar for first-person shooters both in terms of technology and single-player gameplay, and now you can experience this futuristic action- adventure for less than 10 bucks. Unreal may be old, but you would never know it by looking at the graphics. They still stand as some of the most stunning visuals ever put in an action game, and best those of many newer games we've played. Unreal 's only real stumbling block is its uninspired gameplay, which relies too much on standard "find the key" puzzles. The game is challenging regardless--most of the enemies are smart--and we found ourselves pressing ahead just to see what sort of beautiful, strange new environment we would end up in next. We also had a lot of fun playing deathmatch games against the computer-controlled "bots," which put up a heck of a fight. The artificial intelligence

Best Action Game Ever!

Pros: Graphics, sound, music, monster intelligence
Cons: Getting networking to work
It's not the newest game out there, but I still think it is better than any other game as of the time I am writing this (Feb. 13 2000). I have Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 also, and I like the original Unreal better than either of them. Single player, or multi-player cooperative are better than the deathmatch. The graphics are nice and detailed, and very smooth (if you have the right computer for the job). This game made me nervous at the beginning of the first level. You start out with 12 health and no weapons. There are screams, explosions, earthquakes, and room-rumbling Skaarj growls, making you think something is going to jump out at you any second (which sometimes does happen). The music is perfect in this game. Sometimes it is calm and slow, and when there is a part with a lot action going on, it picks up the beat to some great techno tracks.
The monster intelligence in this game is amazing. They don't just stand there and hit you like in most other games. They dodge your attacks, and stay close to you at first. If they start hurting, they will back off so they are harder to hit, or sometimes go get a friend to help them kill you. If you sneak up on an enemy, you can see them doing stuff sometimes. Sometimes there are several of them huddled around in a circle playing craps or poker. Some of them might be cleaning the blood off of their weapons. Others will twirl a staff around for fun.
Playing cooperative games is fun. Is is the single player levels, but multiple people can play cooperatively to beat it. One complaint I have about this game is to get a network game to work, the versions have to be the same (at least in my experience). It can get annoying trying to get a network game going. My friend bought his copy of Unreal at Wal-Mart and none of the updates would work on it for some reason, so he was stuck with v1.0. I don't know if all of the copies that Wal-Mart has are like this or not.
