Unreal stunned action gamers when it was released, thanks to its lush alien environments, scripted mission events, and over-the-top complement of weapons. It raised the bar for first-person shooters both in terms of technology and single-player gameplay, and now you can experience this futuristic action- adventure for less than 10 bucks. Unreal may be old, but you would never know it by looking at the graphics. They still stand as some of the most stunning visuals ever put in an action game, and best those of many newer games we've played. Unreal 's only real stumbling block is its uninspired gameplay, which relies too much on standard "find the key" puzzles. The game is challenging regardless--most of the enemies are smart--and we found ourselves pressing ahead just to see what sort of beautiful, strange new environment we would end up in next. Pros: Great graphics, fun game
Cons: Slow on older machines
I got my copy of Unreal rather late in the game. Our old, old, old computer finally gave up the ghost and when we bought a brand new 700 MHz machine, I wanted to play something COOL. A friend of mine suggested Unreal and I'm ever-so-glad that he did. It's amazing.
The graphics are really great. Although I'm sure there are newer games out there with even better graphics, the outside scenes and color schemes of the whole game are really awesome. I enjoy the sound effects - they add a lot to the sense of suspense and terror in the appropriate places. I was sucked right into the game - so much so that I found myself dodging and ducking behind the keyboard during intense moments.
The controls of the game are easy to master, and the rules of the world easy to learn. (Though I have to admit being somewhat surprised by how far you can fall into water and still survive . . .) The quest is easy enough to figure out and work through without being TOO simple, and there are plenty of surprises thrown in to keep you on your toes.
Even the Deathmatch games against the Bots are enjoying. Kind of gory, but fun. Really gets the adrenaline pumping.
I don't recommend this game if you have an older computer with a sub-standard graphics card, but if your computer can handle it, it a lot of fun.
