Unreal stunned action gamers when it was released, thanks to its lush alien environments, scripted mission events, and over-the-top complement of weapons. It raised the bar for first-person shooters both in terms of technology and single-player gameplay, and now you can experience this futuristic action- adventure for less than 10 bucks. Unreal may be old, but you would never know it by looking at the graphics. They still stand as some of the most stunning visuals ever put in an action game, and best those of many newer games we've played. Unreal 's only real stumbling block is its uninspired gameplay, which relies too much on standard "find the key" puzzles. The game is challenging regardless--most of the enemies are smart--and we found ourselves pressing ahead just to see what sort of beautiful, strange new environment we would end up in next. We also had a lot of fun playing deathmatch games against the computer-controlled "bots," which put up a heck of a fight. The artificial intelligence

Player left a small crater ...

Pros: Impressive graphics and music. Nice solo player story.
Cons: Multiplayer games are mostly limited to variations of Death Match. Patching ended at version 226F
The Bottom Line:
An amazing accomplishment in first-person games. If the story doesn't get you, the eye candy will.
I made it out of the crashed ship. With the first steps into the light of day, I knew a grand adventure was just beginning. However, as I ran up a hill to see what was around, I failed to notice it ending at a cliff ... *SPLAT* all that remained were little bits scattered around the impact point as the message "Player left a small crater" displayed in the corner of the screen. I couldn't help but laugh at my demise.
I speak of my first experience playing the solo player story of Unreal. As you can probably tell I had a blast!
The graphics are well designed. The models used for characters and creatures appear somewhat cartoonish but move smoothly. I am quite impressed with the overall textures and colours used to create the lands, buildings and detail objects. The sky is not just a solid painting stuck on the roof. It moves smoothly giving a realistic feel to the area. A 3D graphics card is highly recommended to get the best eye candy, including mirror reflections in some floors and walls.
There is an interesting range of weapons to thrash your enemies with. It was an intelligent move on the developers part to have weapons that project more than just your typical bullets and rockets. Now you can splash enemies with green bio gel or even zap them with energy pulses. On a side note, when playing the story mode, you are limited to what you can use.
The music selections used for the title theme and background are catchy tunes that get me in the right mood for the scene. Sound effects are pretty good. Character voices are no more than grunts and snarls besides the usual screams from a freshly killed player in a death match. Each weapon has a particular sound that you can identify with. You will know when someone is trying to sneak up behind you, loading up rockets in the "8-ball" weapon.
Multiplayer games are somewhat limited. The variations of game types, including Dark Match and Team games, still carry the same goal as your typical Death Match. The only real difference is the ability to play the story mode online with others. If you want something different, like Capture the Flag, you will have to search for modifications to download. The maps provided for Multiplayer are very enjoyable. There are a great range of sizes and locations to play in. When you get tired of them, there are plenty more to download!
Finally, I'd like to say that most of the bugs that had appeared over the time have been resolved. When I play, I never experience a crash of any kind unless I am playing on certain custom designed maps - probably an error in the map itself.
