Unreal stunned action gamers when it was released, thanks to its lush alien environments, scripted mission events, and over-the-top complement of weapons. It raised the bar for first-person shooters both in terms of technology and single-player gameplay, and now you can experience this futuristic action- adventure for less than 10 bucks. Unreal may be old, but you would never know it by looking at the graphics. They still stand as some of the most stunning visuals ever put in an action game, and best those of many newer games we've played. Unreal 's only real stumbling block is its uninspired gameplay, which relies too much on standard "find the key" puzzles. The game is challenging regardless--most of the enemies are smart--and we found ourselves pressing ahead just to see what sort of beautiful, strange new environment we would end up in next. We also had a lot of fun playing deathmatch games against the computer-controlled "bots," which put up a heck of a fight. The artificial intelligence

What Are Waiting For?!

Pros: Amazing weapons, great interface
Cons: Some texture quirks, occasional bug
What if I told you you could greatly enhance your Unreal Tournament experience?
What if I told you how to better than TRIPLE your arsenal with new and exciting weapons?
Now, what if I told you how to do this for FREE with a 16 Meg download over the internet. All this and more is yours for the fragging with the Unreal4Ever mod.
It's hard to believe FPS games have become so configurable and modifiable. Sure, I remember the disks advertising 1,000 levels for DOOM, but that begs the question, "Do I REALLY want 1,000 levels of DOOM?" Half Life also dove head-first into this realm, and the internet is crawling with levels, mods, and scenarios. I have some neat skin and voice packs for Unreal Tournament, but I have never, and I mean NEVER seen a mod as ambitious as Unreal4Ever. I cannot imagine the hours of dedication, programming, coding, and artistry that went into this free mod.
Before you even begin, you should update your Unreal Tournament to the latest version, 2.0 I think, because the mod will not run without it. This is available at PlanetUnreal.com, as is the mod itself (about 16 megs in size; took me about 40 minutes at 56K).
Here is an idea of some of the toys you get to play with. All are fantastically modeled and animated, though a bit big to scale. Nearly all have alternative fire modes as well. I won't list them all here, but I'll share some of my favorites:
Railgun: Remember the movie Eraser with the railguns that could see through walls? You can use this as a standard, precision plinker, or go to scoped mode, where your screen overlays with little, red, numbered targets, and yes, your shots penetrate walls!
Fleshbomb Rifle: Fire a dart from this puppy, either point-blank or scoped, and your opponent turns red. Give them about 3 seconds and they explode!
Compound Bow: A bow with parabolic trajectory. The alt fire key switches arrow types. Let's see, we've got Flash arrows, poison cloud arrows, fire arrows, dynamite arrows, nuclear arrows, quantum singularity arrows (opens up a temporary black hole that sucks in and destroys players in its vicinity). Decisions, decisions, decisions.
Meelee Weapons: Katana, throwing disc, lightsaber, and chainsaw to name a few. Careful...you'll poke your eye out!
The Drunken Master: Think of a multiple, swarming missile launcher.
There are a host of weapons that speak for themselves, like the pipe bombs, M16 rifle, double-barreled shotgun, shrinker, freezer, and flame thrower.
Think of the included test level like a giant firing range. It includes every weapon in the mod, and plenty of targets. (Nali and lumbering, little dinosaurs) When the shear awe of the new toys wears off, throw in some bots to mix things up. You can also program your standard levels to accept the new items and ammo with an easy-to-configure interface. You do this by configuring the mod, then selecting the UnrealForever mutator.
Considering the scope of this project, it is certainly understandable that there are a few rough spots. Primarily, my textures go crazy occasionally on the load-up, though this may be a function of the UT update and not the mod itself. This is annoying, but not destructive, and a reboot rectifies the situation. Also, there is one weapon, the Quantum Singularity Gun, that quits me to the desktop if I, or a bot, fire it. (the Quantum grenades and arrows work fine for me) Again, no problem...just uncheck the QSG gun from the mod list...there are still plenty of toys to go around.
What more can you say about a free mod that adds a whole new dimension to an already amazing game. Grab Unreal4Ever. It's worth the time, and you'll be glad you did. If you are a UT fan, this will definitely put a smile on your face!
8/13/00 UPDATE:
My suspicion about the UT version was correct. The latest 4.25 update corrected my problem with the Quantum Singularity Gun.
