The 160 GB WD Scorpio SATA Hard Drive delivers superior performance with lower power requirements than other, slower, notebook drives. This lower power consumption yields increased reliability. WD's exclusive WhisperDrive technology make the Scorpio quiet, despite its high spin speed. This drive also features ShockGuard technology, protecting the drive mechanics and platter surfaces from shocks, and DuraStep Ramp, which locks the heads in a secure position away from the disk to provide another layer of protection when the drive is not in use. Utilizing the most technologically advanced material available, the WD Scorpio can perform a minimum of 600,000 load/unload cycles without contamination - up to twice the performance of its competitors. And the Scorpio's rigid stainless steel top cover withstands more than 5 pounds of pressure - nearly 1.5 times the industry average - without pinching vital internal components. Minimize

Good Buy, Good Performance

Author's Rating: Rating: 4/5 stars

Pros: Very very quiet. Great price (comparing to other manufacturers).

Cons: Occasional clicking Noise. Utility can be run from floppy only. Western Digital support is Dismal.

The Bottom Line:
Good Buy, Good Performance. Contact Western Digital before you buy and push for fix that can be run from CD-ROM.

Author's Review
I upgraded my original 80 GB hard disk in my Toshiba laptop with this 160 GB Scorpio EIDE drive (Product No. WD1600BEVE). Before I buy this hard disk I read all the review that I could find on the web. The installation was simple and I did not encounter any issues. The drive is so quiet that I have to look at my laptop LED to see if the drive is reading or writing. I hear some clicking noise every once a while specially when going to sleep mode, and this is due to system initiated power management command being interpreted incorrectly by the hard drive. In order to fix this issue, there is an optimization utility available from manufacturer that can be downloaded and run. The only issue is that the laptop has to have a floppy drive to boot to and run the utility from bootable floppy. The other factor to take in consideration, if you are buying this drive or any other drive larger that 130 GB, you need to make sure system BIOS support it. For this particular drive, your System Board has to have later than Intel 860 Chipset family (if your BIOS using Intel). Contact your Laptop manufacturer to find out if your system supports drives larger than 130 GB. In addition you have to have SP4 (for W2K) or SP2 (for XP) in order to use the full capacity of this drive. Otherwise it will show as 137 GB or less.
Overall this great drive and great performance.
