Want to Talk About a REAL Video Game...

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Good, well-thought out gameplay, good variety, vibrant colors of levels

Cons: Mario's crying is really annoying

The Bottom Line:
I love this game and you probably will too. Just give it a chance!

Anybody remember this gem of a beauty on Super Nintendo? This was always one of my favorites on the Super Nintendo system, not because I'm a Mario fan, or because I'm a Yoshi fan, but because this game is so versatile!
Most games go as follows: run...jump....jump over the hole. Jump on the bad guy. Some other games go as follow: reload the gun. Screw on the scope. Lower the infrared goggles. Aim, shoot the guy in the groin and then in the shoulder.
Yoshi's Island was a nice medium between the two. You could jump and run. But you can also lick, hover, spit, eat your enemies, shoot eggs and butt-stomp. And only in the Mario games could you find that kind of simplicity that doesn't bore you too quickly. Buttons are simple...this button does this, that button does that, no complicated combinations like B,A, Down in order to tiptoe or stuff like that. You're a clan of Yoshis responsible for getting little baby Mario to his parents and his brother, Luigi after that danged stork dropped him (yes, I know it was the villain Kamek's fault, but the stork can't be relieved of all responsibility). Eight themed worlds, ten stages per world, plus if you do really well, you can unlock special areas and bonus stages.
The game requires a measure of thought, as easy as it looks. And the graphics are just as pleasing and dazzling on the tiny GBA screen as they were on your TV back in the Super Nintendo days (plus Yoshi talks now...when he dies, he goes "Yoshiiiii!" You can tell I'm easily amused)
Anyway, it's a pretty decent game. When you get hit by an enemy, little baby Mario goes floating off your back and his crying can get a little on the grating side if you don't get him back quickly, but otherwise....ah....one of the classics. At least to me.
