British girl singers did not comprise the healthiest subgenre of 1960s rock. And since this 22-track compilation of female-sung British pop/rock from 1962-1971 does not include any big names except for Cilla Black (represented by her 1968 B-side Work Is a Four Letter Word) and Helen Shapiro (with her self-penned 1964 B-side He Knows How to Love Me) you might not ready yourself for a stunning experience. It isn't brilliant but actually it's a pretty fair and fun collection of obscurities. Some other names might be faintly remembered (in the U.K. not the U.S.) such as Samantha Jones and Elkie Brooks but for the most part these are no-names working in a vein combining British Invasion sounds with American girl-group/soul-influenced production. Some of the more memorable outings include Jones' wispy Somebody Else's Baby Guillivers People's solid adaptation of Jackie DeShannon's Splendour in the Grass Linda Laine & the Sinners' wistful and folky Don't Do It Baby and Carol Elvin's Don't Leave Me which sounds instantly suitable for a British mid-'60s film soundtrack. As a change of pace there's also the folk-pop of the Levee Breakers' 1965 single Babe I'm Leaving You featuring the voice of Beverley who would become a noted part of the 1970s folk-rock scene as part of a duo with her husband John Martyn. ~ Richie Unterberger

By far the most exciting folk rock act to come out of England for some time The Dunwells (Joe and Dave Dunwell Jonny Lamb David Hanson and Rob Clayton) have made an astonishing impact in Europe and are in the process of doing the same in the States. Well written songs together with sensational performances have been the backbone to their success and their incorporation of blues rock into folk has brought a different element to a rejuvenated genre. Recorded at Willie Nelson's famed Pedernales Studio in Austin Texas and produced by John Porter (The Smiths Elvis Costello B.B. King) 'Blind Sighted Faith' showcases the group's organic blend of acoustic and electric roots music and their use of breath-taking five-part harmonies ('Only Me' and 'Follow the Road' are great examples). The album opener 'I Could Be a King' is a sprightly uplifting number and sets the scene for the title song 'Blind Sighted Faith'; written when the band members were penniless and only had their “music and faith”. The Dunwell Brothers Band find a middle ground between the guitar picking of Mumford and Sons the writing style of Kings of Leon and all the passion of Noah and the Whale. (John Minard)

'Strangeland' is the first album in four years for British alternative rock group Keane. Following on from such multi-platinum releases as 'Hopes and Fears' and 'Under the Iron Sea' this latest record may have taken a little longer to compose but for good reason. In many respects it feels like the completion of a circle says drummer Richard Hughes. [Click on the above image to view other releases by artist] With the addition of new bassist Jesse Quin and illustious producer Dan Grech (Radiohead The Vaccines Lana del Rey) Keane deliver a fresh batch of synthpop and piano rock that sees the band return to what they do best: happy-go-lucky anthems awash with charm and sophistication. The soaring US lead single 'Silenced By the Night' the rapturous 'Black Rain' and the elevating 'Disconnected' are among 12 distinctive tracks that altogether make for a beautifully personal album. Fans of the band as well as fans of alternative rock and pop should consider this a must have. (John Minard)

Legendary British rock ’n’ roll dynamo Stuart Colman revisits Texas in the latest instalment of his spectacular Sugar series. Along with the recent Fantastic Voyage compilations Texas Tornados and It’s Saturday Night! Snazzy Sugar continues highlighting the Lone Star State’s pivotal role in the birth of rock ’n’ roll its 75 incendiary tracks demonstrating how when the music was in its multi-hued infancy across the US West Texas was rearing up with the real call of the wild. The eruptions which burst out of Memphis Cleveland and New York in the fifties are well-documented but over three CDs Colman has excelled himself with this astutely-picked and exhaustively annotated selection showing the crucial role of western swing in rock ’n’ roll’s development timeless rebel yell energy uniquely idiosyncratic personality and a dash of Southern romance. Disc 1 (Right To Rock) gets the vibrant mix of future stars and intriguing obscurities under way with immortal Fender Stratocaster-toting pioneer Buddy Holly’s ‘I’m Gonna Love You Too’ and the young Roy Orbison’s ‘Ooby Dooby’ before traversing gems by the likes of Link Davis Trini Lopez Waylon Jennings Sonny Curtis the Crickets Lelan Rogers the Fireballs the Five Bops the Click-Clacks and the Leen Teens. The good rocking continues through CD2 (Play it Cool) thrusting forth such names as Chuck Tharp Sid King Ray Campi Link Davis Mickey Gilley Buddy Knox the Tu-Tones the Champs and Dean Beard with the Crew Cuts. The Cowtown heavy-hitters continue their rampage on Disc 3 (aptly-titled Turn Me Loose) corralling names including Jimmy Dee & the Offbeats Joe Clay Sleepy La Beef Al Urban Hal Goodson & the Raiders Teen Kings Alvis Wayne Tooter Boatman & the Chaparrals the String-a-Lings the Fireballs Earl Henry and an early Kenny Rogers outing called ‘That Crazy Feeling’ before Buddy Holly returns with ‘Well…Alright’ winding up this glorious new artefact for the rock ’n’ roll hall of fame.

Celilo the acclaimed Indie/Psych/Atmospheric Folk band from Portland Oregon will release their new full-length Buoy Bell in August 2011 the follow-up to 2009's Bending Mirrors (which Uncut Magazine proclaimed evokes the sleepy languor and unhurried warmth of Harvest era Neil Young).Buoy Bell is dedicated to the memory of their late drummer and brother in music Kipp Crawford. They began recording the album in the summer of 2009 starting with the song Axis (which features the incomparable Crawford on drums.) Following his death the band took a break to regroup. Two months later they reemerged with Matt Cadenelli on drums and continued work on Buoy Bell. Though half the record was written before Crawford passed the entire album is infused with his spirit. Straddling the boundaries between indie rock disco surf psychedelia and atmospheric folk on Buoy Bell Celilo moves beyond the rain soaked boot gazing of Bending Mirrors. Although their sound shows flashes of British psychedelia and at times evokes the burgeoning New Folk of the Pacific Northwest Celilo have developed something unique: mud splattered alchemy a hushed radiator glow with Steinbeckian lyrical observation and burnt molasses vocals set to the beautiful and tragic sleeplessness of indie city skylines. A direct result of front man Martin's newfound comfort level as a songwriter and a front man his voice has come full circle and instantly defines the band's songs.Full of laments heartache optimism and reverberance Buoy Bell delivers sweeping imagery and soul-searching fragility and counterbalanced by vibrant lush and oft-daunting musical composition that challenges both the band and the listener to pick up every nuance. As diverse as it is cohesive the album plays through like a late-night soundtrack to a never to be forgotten conversation with a friend. Buoy Bell was recorded with producers Jordan Leff at Secret Society Gregg Williams (Blitzen Trapper Dandy Warhols Snow Patrol) at the Trench and Dylan Magierek (Starfucker Builders and Butchers Mark Kozelek) at Type Foundry. Additional tracking was done at Martin’s home studio - and as in the case with Old Loves around one mike and a bottle of wine at the dining room table.

Valhalla Dancehall is the band’s fourth album proper following the Mercury-nominated Do You Like Rock Music? in 2008 and the Man Of Aran soundtrack in 2009. With its title Valhalla Dancehall invokes a wild-eyed internationalism alluding to both the Norse mythos and Jamaican discos – to the Viking heaven and Caribbean good times. BSP are maybe unlikely to be taking up residence in downtown Kingston but the album title and the music it comes with are antidotes to limited horizons and parochial mindsets. BSP have recently played live inside the Arctic Circle and atop the Great Wall Of China. With its ambition and sense of wonder the new album mirrors such globe-girdling scope.

After the great success of a compilation made to showcase American Rock and Roll instrumentals it seemed only necessary to make a british version filled with all the masterpieces from back in the day that suited the criteria. Although the Americans seemed to have Rock and Roll down to a T the British scene really caught on in the '50s as this CD definitely shows containing some belters from the high-point of British Rock and Roll music. The two-disc album contains tracks from legends such as Bert Weeden Chris Barber The Shadows and Victor Silvester.
