When you think of Sega, three words normally spring to mind: Blue, Spikey and Hedgehog. You've guessed it: Sonic is Back. This time it's with the Sega Dreamcast and in full Technicolor. With a new lease of life, new friends and new baddies, Sonic has certainly got his work cut out for him--in a breezy, buzzing world that shows the transfer of an old game to a new console needn't be limp. Now we are granted shots of Sonic running at high speed, the calming ocean in the background and other graphical niceties. There are times when you have to be precise with the position of Sonic, and after bouncing your way through numerous trampolines this it can be annoying. Still, every time our little friend turns and waves everything just seems all right. This game ranks with other titles in the genre. If you're a Sonic fan, but never got around to getting this title for your collection then it certainly is a must. If however you are a slightly less devoted Sega fan, then perhaps other titles such as Rayman 2 that have moved the genre are most appropriate. This said, a Sega console without Sonic the Hedgehog is like a fish without a bicycle. --Stuart Miles

Is it true? Game icon Sonic is zipping around the NEOGEO in a new 2-D adventure? That's right. Untethered from the series' traditional Sega platform, the 20th release (give or take a few imports and rarities) in the Sonic series revives the classic gameplay last seen on the Sega Game Gear hand-held system. But Sonic Pocket Adventure is far from a clone. This version contains new moves, new levels, new baddies and more for a new generation of gamers. For those who haven't met the little blue fella, Sonic is a gloved, sneaker-wearing and quite speedy hedgehog who rolls, leaps and dashes through numerous levels filled with obstacles, ramps, loops, corkscrews and all sorts of bashable enemies. Rings are scattered around each level--collecting 100 of them earns an extra life. Grab your link cables: two players can take Sonic and his buddy Tails for a spin in this version. --Eric Twelker

Stan, Kyle, Kenny and Cartman are back, in an all-new game based on the cult American cartoon South Park. South Park Rally pits the various residents of South Park against each other in a go-kart style race, not unlike Mario Kart 64. Every part of South Park plays a role in the game from the loveable wildlife to even the locations. From this rich source, Acclaim Entertainment Ltd has managed to produce a game that is visually stunning, whilst still staying faithful to Matt Stone's and Trey Parker's creations, making the game instantly recognisable when placed next to its peers. Completing one of the many gaming modes unlocks hidden characters, additional game modes or tracks stored in the game, making this game high on the replay value.South Park Rally's game engine may not be as sophisticated as a real driving simulation, but by adding extra controllers, with the option of 4 players, fun will still be had by all.Fans of racing games and South Park need look no further than South Park Rally. However, for gamers who require a more realistic edge to their racing, Tokyo Highway Challenge may be a better option. --Alex Leung

While you may not be familiar with the original Dead or Alive--a run-of-the-mill fighting game most famous for the bouncing breasts of its female combatants--the sequel Dead or Alive 2 is a major-league contender that ranks up there with genre giants (including Soul Calibur and the Tekken series). Dead or Alive 2 features drop-dead gorgeous visuals, with gracefully animated 3-D characters rendered in great (and in some cases, downright naughty) detail. Not merely scenic backdrops, the lavish 3-D arenas are also highly interactive: fighters get slammed and thrown against walls, and, in some cases, they can be thrown through windows and off ledges, with the camera viewpoint following the aggressor as he or she jumps down to the lower level of the arena to continue the punishment. A game that plays as good as it looks, Dead or Alive 2 sports a rich combat system that's heavy on the counterattacks. Gameplay moves along at a blazingly fast pace, and the simple controls are easy to pick up on and make executing combo moves a breeze; this is a brawler that both button-mashers and hardcore gamers will enjoy. Unlike other fighting games which contain hidden features that must be "unlocked," Dead or Alive 2 pretty much lays all its cards out on the table from the start. There are 12 fighters to choose from (each with at least one alternate costume) and seven modes of play are available (including tag battle mode and a two-on-two battle royal that up to four players can join). --Joe Hon Pros: Drop-dead gorgeous visuals Blazingly fast gameplay; simple yet effective controls Highly interactive 3-D arenas 7 modes of play, including tag battle mode Cons: Virtually none to speak of

If you're a fan of motorcycle racing games, then you might want to book some private time with your trusty game console. Acclaim's motorcycle racer has plenty of good ideas going for it, but substandard follow-through and too-easy races keep it trapped in the middle of the pack. In addition to the standard Gran Turismo-esque races, licensing tests, and upgrades, Ducati World offers a number of innovative gameplay options. For example, the game's challenge mode allows players to choose their bikes and put money on the line in a head-to-head race. It might be gambling, but at least it's cheaper than racing for real pink slips. While the game has plenty of bikes to choose from, including several from years gone by, the racing is at times so easy that most seasoned gamers will soon start looking around the room for other disks to spin. A collection of gameplay modes will keep the attention of hardcore bike enthusiasts, but this game will seem to others as rushed as an impromptu game of chicken. Ducati's graphics are dated, and its music is simply terrible. --Todd Mowatt

The story of Dragon's Blood goes like this; set in a mythical world of dragons, elves and all things magical, you have the choice of two characters to play. A bold warrior with a big sword, who possesses a limited amount of spell-casting abilities or a magician with weaker strength, but a greater power in the casting spell department. Brought into recover the mess after the elves--who of course were supposed to be guarding a scared amulet but let it fall into the wrong hands--this game involves you battling across 15 rather large levels to get the thing back. As you would come to expect, both characters grow in strength over the course of the 15 levels, with the warrior becoming the ultimate brutish man, whilst the foxy lady magician concentrates on learning the 20 or so spells to rid the world of any baddies. To its credit, this game does what is does well, with the puzzles concentrating on the navigation rather than the usual move one block, run to the other side of the map, move another and then the door in the far left hand corner will open. The monsters are fairly useful as well, having not only AI (artificial intelligence) but also something called AP (Artificial Personality) meaning that each creature behaves differently when faced with certain situations. This game does have the odd innovative feature and is a worthy add on to anyone's fantasy esque collection, however, something is missing, don't ask what, but for all its fun and enjoyment their is just something not quite right. --Stuart Miles

Do you ever wonder what all of those worms squirming around subterranean tunnels are scheming? We do, too. As it turns out, according to Worms Armageddon, our wacky segmented friends have a stockpile of crazy weapons and are waging a war big enough to turn the world into a heaping compost pile. Who knew? Worms Armageddon brings the humorously addictive gameplay of the very popular Worms series to the Dreamcast for the first time. The strategy-based gameplay is as unique as the premise. Commanding a team of worms, players wriggle and shoot through 30 missions and 14 training levels. Players take turns moving a worm warrior into position and then firing at the opposing team, using an arsenal of weapons ranging from mines and kamikaze attacks to the more traditional exploding sheep attack and banana bombs. Naturally, the commander who best combines strategic moves with creative attacks wins the worm war. Join the throngs of fans of this unique game series and you'll never look at a grinning, gun-toting earthworm in the same way again. --Stuart Miles

Saving the world from Nazi tyranny on the Dreamcast has never been this interesting or complicated. However, it's not the World War II goosesteppers of Hidden and Dangerous that are the worst of your troubles. Rather, it's the high learning curve and general lack of intelligence of the men under your command. As a leader of up to four of the finest fictional SAS soldiers, you must outfit and lead your men deep into enemy territory, fulfilling mission goals that rely more on stealth and speed than a quick trigger finger. Your men can be picked off with one bullet, so watch where and how you step. Since you are leading four individual troops, you might guess controlling them would be problematic. You'd be right. Every button on the Dreamcast controller is used multiple ways, and it will take a while to get used to controlling your troops. Thankfully, most controls can be accessed via a Dreamcast keyboard, which lessens the problems. If you survive learning the interface, you'll find that Hidden and Dangerous' movie-like musical score and atmosphere (thanks to nice graphics) make it quite absorbing, especially compared to the similar Rainbow Six.Oddly, your men have a tendency to become trapped in corners, get run over by trains, and react very slowly when getting shot at. Occasionally, they'll float on nothing at all. These are all bugs that were in the PC version and should've been squashed before being released on the Dreamcast. Such sloppiness really does hurt the overall fun of Hidden and Dangerous. --Mark Brooks

Perhaps a better name for this game would be Mild Metal, because playing it isn't likely to raise your temperature. Playing this enjoyable mission-based tank game is rather meditative, in that players are required to think tactically in order to reach their goals. Don't expect to be wowed by graphics or sound effects, but do bring your brain for this old-school treasure. To beat each level, players must drive a tank around large, hilly, desolate areas while scooping up precious containers of glowing energy capsules before dropping them off at your home base. This game challenges the player with a wildly varying elevation and drab-coloured terrain. The control scheme for shooting is also tough to tackle. Players fire their tank's cannon by pressing a button, but holding the button down will increase the angle of trajectory. Not only that, the energy capsules are often obstructed, requiring all sorts of physical puzzle solving to get at them. While not exactly thrill-a-minute, this game has plenty of depth and challenge to keep thoughtful gamers happy for quite some time. --Jeff Young Pros: New control scheme Impressive explosions Fun puzzle solving gameplay Cons: Drab graphics and sound fail to excite the senses

Football is a rare thing on the Dreamcast, so when you get the chance of a game, it always has high hopes. UEFA Striker, although not a FIFA, is a high hope for the Dreamcast, and with commentary from the likes of Jonathan "get excited about a corner" Pearce and Ron Atkinson, you know you could be in for a treat. So with UEFA offering 130 teams--all with correct name spelling--and nine game modes UEFA Striker has plenty to offer. Couple this with a huge element of customisation and gameplay that opens further elements of the game and you'll be in for some good football. The control method is your standard shoot, pass, boot and tackle and although lacking the precision of the FIFA series is useable to soon rack up the goals. This is a welcome non-arcade football game for the Dreamcast. --Stuart Miles

Exclusive to the Dreamcast, Mortal Kombat Gold is the latest rendition of Midway's arcade classic fighter. Running at 60 frames per second with high-resolution graphics--a first for this series on any platform--the game boasts the look and feel of a quarter-munching upright arcade machine. The fighting system in this game is basically the same as it was in Mortal Kombat 3, with the addition of a few new characters and weapons and some subtle gameplay tweaks. There are several new gameplay modes that should excite Mortal Kombat and fighting-game fans. A new battle mode enables would-be combatants to select teams of multiple characters for team-based fighting. There is also a one and two-player endurance mode, a traditional "versus" mode, two-on-two fighting, and a practice mode. The latter explains to players how to perform fatalities but, disappointingly, doesn't let you perform them. With only minor updates, Mortal Kombat Gold falls back on its roots. It's a good game if you are an avid Mortal Kombat fan, though others may wish to consider starting their Dreamcast fighting game collection with Soul Calibur, Power Stone, Virtua Fighter 3 Team Battle and Street Fighter Alpha 3. --Todd Mowatt Pros: Classic Mortal Kombat characters with updated features High-resolution graphics at 60 frames per second Additional gameplay modes increase replay ability Cons: Not much different from Mortal Kombat 3 Characters are stiffly animated Background detail scant
