A handheld version of Namco's venerated fighting series, this PSP game is based on the arcade expansion to Tekken 5. Dark Resurrection features over 30 characters, including Dragonuv and Lili, the two new characters that were added for the Dark Resurrection arcade update. Also making the trip over from the arcade are new stages, themselves based off the original Tekken 5 stages, but with climate and time effects as well as new background objects, totalling 19 stages. Namco has a few additions exclusively for the PSP version as well. Look forward to new game modes, including time attack, practice and mini games, while ad-Hoc wireless play allows for multplayer bouts. Namco hopes to add new items to the game, perfect for creating custom characters prior to a match.

The Best Handheld Fighting Game Ever Made (so far)
| Author's Rating: |
|
Pros: AMAZING gfx, sfx, replayability, very quick loading times.
Cons: Controls, corruption of data online.
The Bottom Line:
Out of the 7 PSP games I have, this is the one I'm still playing.
Tekken: Dark Resurrection, aka Tekken 5.5 is hands down the best fighting game made for any type of handheld system up to date. The graphics are amazing since the PSP's small screen compensates for the smaller number of pixels compared to a 14-inch or larger T.V. or arcade machine screen. The fighting stages are highly detailed, and somewhat interactive; if you are thrown by a character, the ground shatters in certain stages. Every star, penguin, or Buddha Statue is detailed to near perfection. Character ending movies for the story mode are amazing; seeing Yoshimitsu slice through water (and Bryan Fury) followed by an explosion got me stunned.
What's amazing is that with all the graphics, and brilliant sound, the loading times are very quick and seem almost non-existent. One may have to wait 4-10 seconds in between stages.
There's also great replayability value. There is Tekken Bowl mode, Survival, Time Attack, Command Attack, Gold Rush, Dojo Mode, Story Mode, Quick Battle, and Arcade Mode. There's also online data exchange and Ghost downloads (AI's you can download to fight against), and you can update your profile to see your online ranking of all the aforementioned modes. The win-loss data is recorded for each character you use, and a character can be promoted to various ranks. While there is not much to all this (other than, er... Bragging rights?), it does add some motivation to develop each tekken Character.
There are a couple of minor issues. One is unfortunately the PSP's fault, but nevertheless affects the Tekken gaming experience. The four button d-pad makes it very difficult to reliably accomplish certain combo's that involve the diagonal direction. Since a good fight can be lost by merely missing a certain command, this issue is frustrating. I usually avoid using characters who have too many "diagonals" in their moves. Second, is the actual online ranking. Apparently, rankings are very easily hacked into, so my copy of Tekken will never rank my profile, which is a minor but rather annoying issue.
