A guerrilla war is raging on Taro-469 between the human-owned Ecco Corporation and the ruthless alien Naz'Ha over the Lazari crystals, a unique and powerful energy source that only seems to be found on Taro-469. The Naz'Ha invaded the former corporate colony, massacring the colonists. With the their superior technology powered by the Lazari crystal, the Naz'Ha have annihilated four waves of Ecco's retaliatory attacks over the past six months. It was only after Ecco was able to capture a Naz'Ha vehicle that the corporation's scientists were able to unlock the secrets of utilising the energy source and thereby meet the aliens on an equal playing field. Players will battle an alien race in a war for a newly discovered and immensely powerful crystal energy resource. The player will control "The Aggressor" a transforming hover vehicle that can be upgraded by collecting alien technology crystals. Players will also be able to take command of the mothership's gun turrets. During the game missions, the player will be able to issue commands to his wingman. The wingman can be used to attack specific targets or to unleash a super attack. With both wheeled and hover modes the Aggressor vehicle gives the player realistic multi-mode physics and strategic choice for vehicular combat. Issue commands to your wingman for aerial cover, attack support, and delivery of super attacks. Battle enemies using the turrets of the Monolith mobile base. Earn numerous vehicle upgrades by collecting alien Nano-techs dispersed in levels throughout the game. Explosive vehicle combat action. ... Read more
Every now and then, certain genres of computer game make a comeback and we all nod and remember the good old days. Dynasty Warriors 2 brings back the halcyon days of the sideways scrolling beat 'em up, updated for the new millennium and with spiffy new 3-D-graphics, but at heart it's the same bloodthirsty gorefest we all knew and loved on the eight-bit consoles. It has to be said from the off that this is a one-track game. The basic premise is that the player, taking on the guise of one of a number of feudal Japanese warlords, must lead an army of brave warriors into battle, dicing with the opposition as they go. The armies are staffed with the usual collection of cannon fodder with a variety of captains and other senior leaders thrown in for good measure. There's a vain attempt at introducing strategy into the mix by allowing the player to stop the action and peruse a battlefield map to see how just far their forces have advanced, but in truth the player's army are a bit lily-livered and seem to leave all the fighting to the boss. Graphics are very high quality and as your chosen warlord spins and charges into the fray there's a real sensation of the high splendour of ancient Japanese warfare, but what leaves the experience a little flat is the distinct lack of moves which can be executed with the supplied battle sword. Aside from a couple of aerial moves there are really only half a dozen hacks and slashes which may be applied to the soft flesh of the opposition, removing some of the potential enjoyment factor and the death sequences are beaten foes are a little too sanitised for most with the vanquished foe spinning around, screaming then fading out into the background. That said, peel aside the superfluous layers and Dynasty Warriors is an excellent beat 'em up which combines all the best bits of the days of yore with the best console technology of the 21st century. Gameplay is fluid and the addition of power-ups--collected after beating senior opponents or breaking open crates with your weapon--allow for quick saves, energy boosts and more, all serving to make this an enjoyable, if not very short-lived experience. --James Gordon

Reign of Fire is based on the dragon-filled movie that promised battles between dragons and humans, but unfortunately didn't deliver. However, Bam!'s officially licensed title is filled to the brim with dragons, tanks and lots of nice machine guns--and you can choose to play as a human taking on the pesky dragons or as one of the fire-breathing monsters taking on the pesky humans. Great stuff. In the Human element of the game you have to drive around the game areas completing various mission objectives while shooting at the hordes of ancient beasts. You start with just a machine gun hitched to the back of a jeep to fight the flaming brutes, and as the game progresses you pick up lots of new and pretty looking weapons to add to your arsenal. In Dragon mode you get to swoop around spitting fire balls and terrorising the poor humans; it really is great fun--you can even pick up vehicles and throw them around. Reign of Fire offers two different control methods: a simple mode and a more advanced aiming setup in which you use the right analogue stick to aim with; it's hard to start with but very effective once you're used to it. Overall, Reign of Fire is a fun and polished title which makes you think what a great film the movie could have been. --Laurent S Hall

Given baseball's rather limited appeal it seems odd that Acclaim should take the plunge and release a title like All-Star Baseball 2002 in Britain and Europe. To the British, the sport of baseball is little more than rounders in tight-fitting pants; however, in the US it rakes in the kind of dollars that Hollywood films can only dream of. All things considered, ASB 2002 is an incredibly entertaining game. Graphically, it holds its own against anything that EA Sports have released for the PS2 so far. There are dozens of faithfully recreated stadia, 250 real-life player representations and more lighting effects on the pitch than you can shake a stick at--it looks truly beautiful. Sound is good too, if a little lacking in variety. The commentary gets straight to the point and isn't overly chatty, though a few baseball equivalents of John Madden's finer moments wouldn't have gone amiss to lighten the tone a little. It's in the gameplay where this title really stands out. There are so many ways to configure play it's almost frightening. From full seasons of 162 games to half seasons, round robin competitions and more, there's something here to suit the needs of every baseball fan. Particularly impressive is the effective use of the 3-D batter screens, where players can adjust the pitch, angle and strength of the batter swing to produce a breathtaking number of shots ranging from safety bunts to sky-high home run spectaculars; there are very few sports games of any flavour that allow this kind of adjustment. Pitching is a true art form in its own right, with a varied selection of throws available, all of which can be tweaked mid-pitch to add extra spin and height in an effort to fool the guy with the bat. Outfield action plays a big part too, with real world physics aplenty leading to diving catches and those hilarious "caught-on-camera" moments when two players cannon into one another causing physical injury and hilarity among the crowd. It has to be said that ASB 2002 took some getting used to. The speed of play is fairly slow and the sensory overload caused by pages and pages of stats can be confusing but stick with it and All-Star Baseball 2002 will repay you with hours of entertainment. --Chris Russell

Another football season, another slew of titles all promisi
... Read more
Another football season, another slew of titles all promising to be the definitive recreation of the beautiful game. This Is Football 2003 (the fourth version in all, the second on PS2) will probably bag third place in the premiership of footy games: this time round, the drastically revamped FIFA Football 2003 and perennial hardcore favourite Pro Evolution Soccer 2 are likely to be battling for the top slot come Christmas. The game boasts over 13,000 players from leagues all over the world [including the English second division, so finally Cardiff City can be promoted to their rightful place in the Premiership--Bluebirds Ed] and the option to create and customise even more teams. You can even start by managing a school side and work your way up to league level, though this is a fairly tedious and unrewarding option. The gameplay hasn't changed dramatically from last year, though the learning curve is steeper and your opponents' AI is substantially improved. The goal-scoring sweet spots are still there, but you have to work harder to find them. This is not a Pro Evolution-style simulation: the action moves continuously from end to end. However, high scoring matches, at least in single player mode, are rare. Graphically TIF shines, and both Pro Evolution and FIFA will have to go some to match the player likenesses (at least in the higher echelons; further down the leagues the players become more generic) and the lovingly realised stadia. This Is Football doesn't have FIFA's brand identification or Pro Evolution's loyal following, but it's a slick, comprehensive and enjoyable game that deserves to qualify for the Champions League of football video games, if only by achieving a runner-up spot. --Michael Bartley

If ever a film was overdue for the console treatment it is Rocky. The game is full of the atmosphere of all five films. From Rocky's humble beginnings to his crowning glory as the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, this game has the lot. Take control of the Italian Stallion in your effort to beat the rest--including Apollo Creed, Clubber Lang (aka Mr T), Ivan Drago and Tommy Gunn--and be the best. Like most boxing games it has the usual exhibition and sparring modes, but being licensed from a film it also has the all-important movie mode, which is where the fun starts. Progress through the fights to unlock each new opponent en route to meeting your big movie rivals. After each fight you'll need to improve your fighting prowess by training; you can do this the hard way, under your own steam, or opt for the auto-train mode which improves your precious stats for your next bout. Finish the movie mode and unlock the knockout tournament and prepare for some intense button bashing. With the ring full of boxing sims the question is "Which one packs the biggest punch?" Rocky, with its great graphics, great combos and the all-important great gameplay, is the top contender. --Rob Holliday This review refers to the Xbox version of the game
