If you like the idea of Metal Gear Solid but could've done without the 20-minute long cut-scenes, try Sly Raccoon, where platform games and stealth-'em-ups meet in cel-shaded heaven. As anyone's mother will tell you, stealing is wrong. Anyone's mum except Sly Cooper's, it seems, because he managed to get born into a family of morally challenged thieves whose most prized possession is a book explaining how to execute all their various cat-burgling skills. Ironically, as the game starts the book gets stolen and it's up to Sly to defend the family dishonour and steal it back again. Although the basic gameplay of Sly Raccoon is that of a fairly ordinary platform adventure, complete with linear levels full of bizarre architecture and fairly dim bad guys, things are livened up considerably by Sly's ninja-like thieving skills. As well as having to duck and dive between moving headlights, laser-beam gates and the like, Sly also begins to gain such enviable skills as being able to turn invisible and use banisters as slides. The graphics in Sly Raccoon are excellent too: cel-shaded so they look like 3-D cartoons and very nicely detailed with particularly impressive cut-scenes. There are downsides, of course--the game's not terribly long and the stealthy bits take a back seat to more mundane platform sections a few times too many--but overall this is a classy adventure for platform, raccoon and/or burglary fans everywhere. --David Jenkins

There's only one word to describe The Bouncer, SquareSoft's latest beat-em-up action title for the PlayStation 2: gorgeous. From the second the opening credits kick in this game oozes quality, putting everything that went before it to shame. It's like watching an action film with fight sequences you can direct yourself; the visuals alone are enough to convince the wary that buying a PlayStation 2 is a great idea. The voice acting, too, is among the best yet on a PS2 title and really adds to the atmosphere of the piece--clearly a lot of thought has gone into this, and has paid off greatly. The plot is fairly straightforward: a 15-year-old girl, who happens to have three burly bouncers for buddies, gets kidnapped by a multi-national corporation. The guys decide to take action; setting off for the corporate HQ, stumbling upon all manner of bizarre and intriguing mysteries. The Bouncer is, in essence, a fighting game similar to the old Capcom title Final Fight. The bulk of the plot is driven by non-interactive FMV sequences, with the player taking control of one of the three main protagonists at the beginning of the fight sequences--of which there are many. Given the number of moves it's possible to make during the heat of battle, Square have made intelligent use of the DualShock pad, allowing high, medium and low-level attacks, the strength of which can be altered according to how hard you hit the buttons. Falling as it does between interactive novel and beat-em-up there's a little something here for everyone, and if all else fails The Bouncer is so visually appealing that it will be difficult not to like it. --Chris Russell

In these violent times, when every game seems to be described as "darker, more mature" than the last one it's refreshing to find a game that can make shooting bad guys seem like a fun and wholesome pursuit once again. Ratchet & Clank 3 is just such a game and although it may not be deep or original it is fun and amusing, which is a perfectly fair trade in most circumstances. This third entry in the series sees the odd couple returning to the Planet Veldin from the first game and getting involved in another nonsensical adventure that this time features Captain Qwark as a playable character. There's also fifteen new weapons with up to four levels of upgrade, new vehicles like the Turbo Slider and the Hovership and a revamped artificial intelligence for the enemy to provide that extra challenge. Despite all this though the major new feature in Ratchet & Clank 3 is the new multiplayer mode. Offline up to four can compete in various split screen modes or you can go online and play an eight-player challenge in modes such as standard deathmatch, capture the base and siege. These follow the same principles as PC games such as Unreal Tournament 2004 (even down to the inclusion of vehicles) but are much easier to get into and play. The single player mode is still as engaging as ever but with the extra longevity offered by multiplayer this is one sequel that seems to be going out of its way to offer something new. --David Jenkins
