Nintendo fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief: StarFox Armada is here and the unpleasant memories of the disappointingly bland StarFox Adventures can be forgotten forever. The original StarFox game (called StarWing in the UK) was the first ever 3D console game and Nintendo’s reinterpretation of classic 2D shoot ‘em-ups like R-Type and Gradius. Instead of flying sedately from left to right across the screen though in StarFox you zap through gargantuan space armadas and over bizarre alien worlds in what is undoubtely the best Star Wars game never made. This long awaited sequel, developed by arcade masters Namco (creators of Soulcalibur and Air Combat) features even more of the same, with all the expected improvements in graphics and detail. However the main thrust of the game is the innumerate multiplayer modes with a four player co-operative mode where everyone can pilot their own fighter or simply sit on the wing of someone else’s and take pot-shots with a laser gun. When you’d prefer to hurt your friends rather than help them there’s also a full-featured deathmatch mode, where you get to run around on foot using sniper rifles and rocket launchers or climb aboard one of the various spacecraft and tanks that litter the arenas. This more open style of gameplay adds a whole new to dimension to the game, almost turning it into a kind of mini sci-fi version of Battlefield 1942. So forget about all that tedious object collecting from Rare’s unsung swansong and experience StarFox the way it’s mean to be. --David Jenkins

Medal of Honor returns to its console roots with this first
... Read more
Medal of Honor returns to its console roots with this first outing on next-gen machines for Lt Jimmy Patterson. This time the setting is June 6, 1944--D Day and beyond--and the game begins with you storming the beachhead at Normandy. Frontline definitely lives up to its name, and from the outset the action is intense. As you rush up the shingle, comrades falling beside you and artillery ringing in your ears, you'd be forgiven for thinking you were on the set of Saving Private Ryan. Players of the PC incarnation will recognise this mission from Allied Assault, but here is where the similarities end; Frontline is a new game with new objectives and levels designed perfectly for the console. If you survive D-Day you enter the real meat of the game--Operation Market Garden (Arnhem). From scuttling a U-boat to clearing checkpoints in the town itself, the missions are brilliantly designed. The true playability of the Medal of Honor series is how immersive it is: narrative, graphics and sound all combine to give you one of the most gripping first-person shooters on any format. Backgrounds are beautifully detailed, and the sound really sets the game apart. The control system is also intuitive, with the option to customise your controller or choose one of the two default options: MOH Sharpshooter (two analogue stick-control) or the original controls used in the PSone's Medal of Honor. There are only two criticisms that can be levelled at the game. Firstly, the artificial intelligence errs on the stupid side, with enemies standing around watching comrades get shot, and although this changes with the difficulty level it never responds in a particularly "human" way. Secondly, you can only save at the end of a mission (always a feature of console conversions), so it's quite frustrating to be unceremoniously dumped right back at the beginning after battling you way through a level--but hey, this is war, after all, and these are small niggles about what is a genuinely phenomenal game. Sign up now: the Allies need you. --Kristen Bowditch--This review refers to the PlayStation 2 edition

Being huge hockey fans we were excited about playing the latest in the long line of EA's NHL series--but we must admit to being a little disappointed with this latest offering, as NHL 2003 in all truth is NHL 2002 plus a few shiny bits. The new features for 2003 are an improved franchise mode which has more of the hardcore managerial events to deal with, such as annual drafts, player waivers, more injuries and suspensions, and more Easter eggs and celebrations to unlock with the NHL cards rewards system. One major gameplay change has been added: the "Gamebreaker" is simply a power bar which slowly energizes as you play, and once full a quick button press will allow you to pull off some pretty funky moves. Also improved is the in-game physics--the puck now rebounds off defenders and sticks with more realism. Our main criticisms (and perhaps this is nit-picking) is that the overly comic commentators have really dumbed the game down, and that there are to! o many Matrix-style slow-motion effects. NHL 2003 plays fantastically and is one of the finest sports games to grace TV screens anywhere; the presentation is top notch and most of the stats are up-to-date (although yet again many of the minor international squads still have imaginary players). But the new tweaks aren't really enough to justify shelling out full price if you already own last year's version--a lesson we hoped EA had learnt after finally getting FIFA right this time. If you're a NHL completist or a hockey fan, or have never played NHL before, then we recommend this game over any other. If you've already got NHL 2002 then make up your mind if you can do without this version's new features. --Laurent S Hall

The promise of mature gaming on the GameCube finally comes from a top quality release courtesy of Nintendo itself. Get ready to shoot, jump and puzzle your way through Metroid Prime, the creepiest, coolest GameCube game yet. As difficult to pigeonhole as its predecessors, Metroid Prime is not, despite what the first person viewpoint might suggest, just a shoot-'em-up. Containing as much platform jumping and puzzle solving as shooting, the game is more like an action-based version of Zelda than any one-note Doom clone. As usual the game stars bounty hunter Samus Aran (perhaps gaming's only female character that isn't scantily clad) in her ongoing battle to contain the freaky jellyfish-like metroids. To do this she must explore and search every nook and cranny of the game world, not just for ways to uncover the plot but for upgrades to her super-cool armoured battle suit. These range from obvious things such as new weapons and gadgets like an infra-red visor to a grappling hook and the hugely satisfying morph ball, which allows you to turn into a giant metal ball bearing and explore previously inaccessible areas. Apart from its uniquely involving gameplay Metroid Prime also features some of the best graphics ever seen on a home console. What's more, they aren't just used in a soulless technical demo; they're used to create a creepy and totally immersive atmosphere unrivalled by any other title. As an added bonus, Metroid Prime connects to the Game Boy Advance title Metroid Fusion to unlock a hidden costume and the complete version of the original Metroid game for the NES. All in all, this is likely to be one of the best games you'll find for some time. -- David Jenkins

It was no surprise that the first Harry Potter games were a huge success, but what was unusual was that they were actually pretty good. Millions of fans will be pleased to hear that the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets game is even better. Taking its visual and audio cues from the movies but sticking closer to the book than a two-hour film ever could, the PS2 game begins as Harry starts his second year at Hogwarts despite an ominous warning from Dobby the House Elf. At its heart Chamber of Secrets is a 3-D platform game, similar to Super Mario or Jak & Daxter, with the same basic controls being used for the majority of the game. However, the nature of the story means the game is peppered with various mini-games and side quests, including Quidditch and Wizard duels. In between the major quests you get a chance to explore Hogwarts, which is impressively massive and filled with hidden secrets--the collecting of Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans being of particular importance since they can then be traded with Ron's brother for everything from Famous Witches and Wizards Cards to upgrades for your Quidditch kit. If the game has only one fault it's the extremely long and unusually frequent loading screens that keep popping up, and which you soon get very tired of seeing. It's not nearly enough to ruin the game though, which must go down as one of the best book/movie conversions of all time. --David Jenkins

As Pikmin 's stranded, miniature spaceperson Olimar, you must find the missing 30 parts your spaceship needs to get you back home; these parts are scattered across a forested area that is crowded with giant (when compared to our hero's size) animals and other hazards. Olimar stumbles across the part animal, part plant, all bizarre creatures he names Pikmin, and will have to learn how to lead the Pikmin around the forest as he uses the abilities of the different coloured creatures to overcome the many obstacles in his path. Learning when and how to make the best use of your Pikmin's skills and traits is the essence of the game. You can control up to 100 Pikmin at a time while figuring out which are best suited for a particular task. Some are better fighters, while others can survive in water or handle explosive bomb rocks. However, even the best Pikmin herder will have to sacrifice a few of the plant-headed beasts for the greater good. It's this constant need to refine and create strategies to minimise losses that makes Pikmin challenging and always fun. The biggest obstacle you face is time; you have only 30 days (each day is about 15 minutes in real time) in which to find the necessary parts. While this keeps the pace of the game up, some may find such limits to be somewhat frustrating, as it means there will be a lot of repetition and rethinking of strategy. It also means that diligent gamers may find Pikmin to be rather a short game. At the end of your gaming day, though, Pikmin is one of the best games the GameCube will have for quite some time.

Who'd have thought that the exploits of a secret agent could be so underwhelming? James Bond Agent Under Fire isn't exactly boring--in fact, the first time you play you're sure to be impressed by the suave looks and immaculate presentation. But it soon becomes clear that this is no sophisticated vintage Bond homage; it's a fleetingly entertaining blast that just happens to feature a famous British secret agent. There are enjoyable elements here though. There're a couple of Crazy Taxi-influenced levels that work well, as well as some mildly diverting "on-rails" shooter stages. At heart, though, like the N64 masterpiece GoldenEye, this is a first-person shooter and one that suffers badly in comparison with that game. There are clever gadgets to amuse yourself with, as well as frequent set pieces in the form of "Bond moves" that will delight the casual fan. But more experienced players will find the lack of depth here distressing. The real problem is the "intelligence" of the enemies. These are the dumbest bad guys you'll ever encounter in a video game. Coupled with the unerring accuracy of your auto aim, you could complete much of the game blindfolded. Consequently, it's difficult to feel much satisfaction, even upon saving the world. The developers have at least made an effort with different styles of play and a decent multiplayer mode, but Agent Under Fire is (at best) a good-ish game in a genre full of great alternatives. --Steve Colton

Arguably the element of the Harry Potter books and films that most lends itself to a video game, Quidditch is a strange sport, and initially seems quite complicated. However, in the new game Quidditch World Cup, it's both fun to play and a good choice for all the family. It's also more straightforward than you'd think. Much thought has clearly gone into providing a gentle learning curve, and picking up the basics of the game is supremely easy. It's helped, of course, by having familiar faces from the Harry Potter world all along the way, guiding you through what you need to know. The ultimate aim is to walk away with the prize of the game's title, but first there's the small matter of the Hogwart's tournament to win. You align yourself with one of the four houses, and seek to win that before you can move on to the international stages. And that promptly gets you into the heart of the action. The gameplay, as you'd expect, is frantic and exciting, and while it's not going to keep the older gamer occupied for too long, its target audience is clearly going to be in its element. To keep things going that bit longer, you can earn Quidditch cards as you progress. These are rewards given to you along the way, and can unlock fresh elements of the game. With plenty to collect, it's an added feature that helps prolong the game's lifespan. Quidditch World Cup is a game with obvious appeal to the many legions of Harry Potter fans. Fortunately for parents the world over, thanks to entertaining gameplay and its faithfulness to the source material, it's not going to disappoint them. --Simon Brew

Mario Kart: Double Dash!! has got to a lot to prove. The original Super Mario Kart on the SNES is still lauded by many as one of the best driving games--and one of the best multi-player games--ever made, but Mario Kart 64 had a less unanimous welcome. Thankfully, Double Dash!! has got everything right--indeed this is probably the best first-party sequel so far for the GameCube: the graphics are excellent, the power-ups are more insane than ever and most importantly the handling of the karts is excellent, with the powerslide of the SNES original all-important once more. The big new gimmick for Double Dash!! is the fact that there are customised karts for you to drive, all of which can seat two characters. This ensures a surprising amount of tactical depth as you can switch the characters around mid-race in order to access each one's unique special weapons. As ever with Nintendo games, the gameplay is perfectly balanced so that the use of power-ups never overshadows the need to be a skilful driver. Indeed, the improved AI of the computer players is immediately noticeable as they move around the tracks in a highly intelligent manner, moving out of your way and blocking you off when necessary. Of course the real draw with any Mario Kart game is the multi-player mode and this is as insanely enjoyable as ever in either race or battle mode. Indeed it's better than ever as you can now have up to 16 people playing at one time if you link up your GameCubes using broadband adapters. --David Jenkins

In Pikmin 2, the feature-packed sequel to Nintendo's original Pikmin adventure (famously inspired by Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto's back garden), players can once more enjoy the earthly delights of germination. Captain Olimar, the astronaut hero of the original game, makes a welcome return and sets about clearing some bad debts with the aid of the titular Pikmin, which grow from the soil when planted. In microcosm, this is a strategy game, but there's more to it than that: although there are strategic and puzzle elements, the overriding theme is one of action, which makes for an equally exciting and challenging game. Two-player modes are new additions in Pikmin 2, and these arrive in both cooperative and versus varieties. The use of a split-screen here works particularly well. Throw in a few extra flavours of Pikmin (white and purple complement the original's spectrum of characters) and Olimar's new, playable sidekick Louie, and you have a complete and thorough sequel to a modern classic. --Jonti Davies

Pokémon Colosseum, like the Pokémon Stadium games that begat it, is primarily a way of seeing the Pokémon you've caught in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire in full 3-D on your GameCube. By connecting a Game Boy Advance to your GameCube (link cable required) you can upload all your data from the portable games so that it appears on your GameCube and on the big screen. This means you can examine your Pokédex of over 200 Pokémon in full 3D, swap and trade items and Pokémon, view extensive tutorials, set out your hidden base, use e-cards and, most importantly, battle. Pokémon Colosseum features a range of battlegrounds, ranging from out in the middle of Petalburg Woods to within a giant stadium with thousands of onlookers. You choose to fight the battles either against the computer, a friend or in a team battle with four people, but whatever you decide suddenly your Pokémon and all their amazing moves will be in super realistic 3-D-–they look even better than they do in the cartoon. Using either the GBA or the normal GameCube controller makes the battles really come alive as you fight for honour or one of the many unlockable secrets. The only problem with Pokémon Colosseum is that it's out so long after Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, but if you can wait that long this an absolute must-have for any Pokéfan. --David Jenkins

Nintendo's original video game icon is reborn in Donkey Konga--most unexpectedly--as the modern face of rhythm-action. Donkey Kong is back, and his jungle beat is catchy as hell. As with all rhythm-action titles, the objective here is simply to keep time with the game's streamed soundtrack. Colourful visual backdrops complement perfectly the selection of pop tunes on offer. Hit the left bongo, hit the right, hit them both--clap your hands, there's a neat sensor device built into the bongo controller--and all the while enjoy non-stop celebration through the life-affirming mediums of cheesy music and eye candy. But this is not merely a pretty, lightweight game. Donkey Konga is particularly impressive because of the balance evident in its design: play well and you'll be rewarded with new credits which can then be taken to the game's shopping area, where new tracks and even new bongo sound effects can be purchased. And with four controllers, multiplayer modes for as many players can be accessed. This is a videogame musical as pure Nintendo-branded fun. --Jonti Davies
