The Game Boy Advance's best original role-playing game is back in stunning form with Golden Sun: The Lost Age. The Japanese have their own peculiar take on role-playing games (RPGs), which adheres to a fairly strict series of features and clichés: young village outcast with mysterious powers, randomly occurring turn-based battles, lots of made-up words with not enough vowels in them. Golden Sun has got them all, and yet it's still incredible fun. The Lost Age is less a sequel and more a second chapter to the first game, picking up right where it left off as Isaac and his buddies try to save the world after their failed attempt to stop the Venus lighthouse from being lit. You don't by any means need to have played the first game to enjoy or understand this one, but if you have, you can upload your team from before and carry on exactly where you left off. Either way there's still tons of new spells and Dijnn to find and use, the best of which create some truly stunning graphical effects when used in battle. If you hate RPGs, you'll hate Golden Sun, but if you have even the smallest interest in the genre you can't go far wrong with this ace portable title. --David Jenkins

If you were looking for a character to associate with Nintendo and the Game Boy, the likelihood is that today you'd say Pokémon--but that hasn't always been the case, and in Super Mario Advance Mario, the once king of Nintendo, is making a comeback on the next-generation Game Boy Advance. Based on the age-old formula of the Super Mario Brothers series, you play the usual host of characters from Mario himself to Princess Peach and even the little mushroom guy. The basic premise is fairly simple: run along the simple platforms, kill the bugs and monsters in your path, and get to the end. It's a game that's very easy to understand, yet not one that's easy to complete, and, like so many games before it, makes you want to come back for more every time. And with over 30 odd levels, it's sure to keep you busy for that time. A great title for all ages, Mario will please grown-ups and children alike as they enjoy the cute graphics and the catchy soundtrack. Probably one of the biggest titles of the Game Boy Advance launch, Mario is one of those games that you just have to have in your collection. --Jason Denwood

Oh no! It looks like your grandad was right--things really were better in the old days. Well, they were if you liked 2-D platform games, anyway, and Yoshi's Island is indisputably one of the best ever made. In a laudable attempt not to rehash its immediate forebear Yoshi's Island goes back in time to recount the touching story of the various yoshis' attempts to unite Baby Mario with his parents. For the first time ever in a Mario game you don't actually control the Italian plumber-to-be but instead his dinosaur pal, who has the curious ability to eat his enemies and then immediately turn them into eggs which he can then fling at more enemies and/or politicians. Since Yoshi isn't particularly fast and can float in mid-air for a few seconds after making a jump, the whole dynamics of the normal Mario gameplay have changed, but the same incredible attention to detail and endless imagination that mark all of Nintendo's best efforts are still here in full effect. In fact they're joined this time, after the rather plain looking prequel, by some wonderful pastel-shaded graphics that were jaw-dropping when the game was originally released in 1995 and still manage to impress now. As with the other Super Mario Advance titles this game also contains a four-player version of the original Mario Bros. arcade game, making it even more of a bargain than it already was. --David Jenkins

Following a strong introduction sequence, it's quickly down to the action in the Game Boy Advance version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. For unlike the Game Boy Color version, the game kicks off with Harry already at Hogwarts, and with some fast learning to do. You step into Harry's shoes, initially moving from classroom to classroom learning new skills and spells, before indulging in activities such as sneaking out of your dormitory at night, fighting off trolls and having a quick game of Quidditch too. You certainly can't accuse the developers of trying to short-change the fans, as it seems they've tried to cram as much of the film into the game. Unfortunately, that's also at the root of the game's main problem. While it tries to cover all angles of the plot, it does mean that some segments of the game lack a little polish, and aren't always that enjoyable. Sure, there's some great fun to be had with the game, and the quality of the graphics means players will instantly relate it to the film. It's just that perhaps a little more development time could have paid dividends. Nonetheless, fans of both the film and books are likely to get some enjoyment out of the game, even if arguably it's inferior to the Game Boy Color version. And if you're not overwhelmed by Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, you can wager on one certainty--this isn't the last we've seen of Mr Potter on the Game Boy Advance... --Simon Brew

As games get ever more realistic and violent it's nice to come across one like Mario & Luigi that values gameplay, originality and gentle humour above other more gratuitous gimmicks. A quasi-sequel to the N64's superb Paper Mario (itself a sequel to the never-released-in-this-country Super Mario RPG on the SNES), Mario & Luigi is essentially an action role-playing game, although it has enough action sequences and mini-games to evade easy pigeonholing. The game's preposterous storyline involves Prince Peach's voice being stolen (and replaced with exploding speech bubbles) and both Mario and Luigi going off in pursuit of those responsible. One of the main conceits of the game is that you control both brothers at the same time, with the actions of one controlled via the A button and the other by the B button. This results in a lot of jumping on each other's heads and some genuinely inventive cooperative puzzles. Combat in the game is turn-based and again you control both brothers at the same time, with special "Bros. Attacks" taking the place of magic. This aspect of the game is particularly close to Paper Mario, with both attack and defence being aided by a press of the character's button at the appropriate time. In these cynical times it's something of a relief to see games like Mario & Luigi still being released: it manages to amuse and entertain without upsetting anyone and is one of the very best games to be released in 2003. --David Jenkins

Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire's updated graphics, with weather
... Read more
Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire's updated graphics, with weather effects, amazing sound and more than 200 Pokémon, also has over 100 new species and makes for a welcome evolution in the series. The game has a lot in common with previous Pokémon games Silver, Gold and Crystal. For example, players can choose to be a boy or a girl trainer, an internal clock sets events at certain times and the game's handy-dandy Pokédex helps players keep track of the many stats. Your main goal is still to beat all the Gym Trainers and become the Pokémon Master, and as before you can trade Pokémon via the Link Cable--both Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire include exclusive Pokémon, and you'll find that some species are common in one game and rare in the other. So if you've played the old games, you'll be right at home. But not all is the same. The most obvious change is in the battles themselves. Now that two Pokémon can fight on your side at the same time, you can tag-team them against an enemy by taking advantage of the strengths of your Pokémons while covering their weaknesses. For example, you can now have a water Pokémon watch your fire Pokémon's back. You can also attack more than one Pokémon at a time. A whole new element to the games focuses on how berries are used in battle. And if you collect enough berries, you can take them to a Berry Blender and make a PokéBlock, which is a little super-charged sweet that raises your Pokémon's "Condition" attributes. You can then groom your Pokémon for regional contests and compete for ribbons like "Best of Show", which will unlock additional contests. There's even strategy in how to best use your berries: pick too many and the berry tree will disappear; plant berries, though, and a tree will grow. You can also build a Secret Base in special areas of the game, which you can decorate just like you can your room. Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire have a great multi-player system, too; you can link up to four players for incredible battles. The only downside is that you can't link up with the old Game Boy Color games. --Bryan Karsh
