WARNING! The population of a small town in Colorado seems to have been infected by a virus with unknown origin. The flu like symptoms usually consist of lethargy cold sweats nausea discomfort intense headaches and a slight discolouring to their complexion. Unfortunately this is usually followed by a sudden urge to savagely rip the limbs from any living creature that might stand in their way whilst chewing on their bones sucking out their brains and chewing on their flesh. An elite cold bloodied and tenacious military force has been sent in to clean up the mess. But where as some residents are more than willing to spend the rest of their short lives in quarantine a small group of survivors escape and head towards an uncertain demise unaware of the eyeball chomping gut splurting nightmare that awaits them.Directed by Steve Miner (Friday the 13th Part 2 House Soul Man Warlock) written by Jeffrey Reddick (Final Destination) and starring the irresistible Mena Suvari (American Pie American Beauty) this re-imagining of George Romero's horror classic is a minefield of extreme gore and violence that takes the zombie genre to a new level of savagery.

Based on Wes Craven's landmark 1972 exploitation flick of the same name LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT is a brutal movie that exposes the darkest recesses of human depravity. The simple plot follows four criminals on the lam who encounter a pair of nubile female teens in a small mountain town. After murdering one and brutally raping the other and leaving her for dead the cons seek refuge at a nearby summer house. The twist is that it's the very home inhabited by the parents of one of the victims. Upon learning that their house guests raped and tortured their 17-year-old daughter the couple exact a revenge that arguably exceeds the excesses of the sociopathic gang. When originally released in 1972 LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT was a shock to the system. Never before had a film shown such images of human wickedness. Grainy and low budget the original film played like a maniacal cackle from the seedy underbelly of an America nursing a brutal post-Aquarian hangover. Things play out a little differently though in 2009. For starters the movie actually looks quite beautiful and the story’s idyllic mountain setting is milked for all it's worth. The performances are noteworthy as well with Garret Dillahunt more than convincing as Krug the gang's swaggering leader; and Monica Potter and Tony Goldwyn portraying the distressed parents with an effective mix of panic courage and blind instinct. In an age marked by both increasingly ghastly films and a public discourse that actually debates the merits of institutional torture a film like LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT really shouldn’t shock anyone. But in both the original and the remake there’s a latent nihilism that permeates the world. The idea of a sense of lawlessness that cannot be understood or prevented but only reacted against is truly disquieting and makes this story unique in the annals of horror.

Direct from the arcades to the Dreamcast, Sega has a sure-fire smash on its hands with this near arcade-quality translation of popular zombie shooter House of the Dead 2. Most fast-action gaming fans will immediately dive into the basic premise of this game: shoot and destroy the zombies that have invaded the creepy haunt known as the Curien Mansion. For what it's worth, House of the Dead 2 does contain a pretty intriguing plot that moves beyond the simplistic point-and-shoot genre. In addition to the fast-moving action, there are several subplots which shed light on the darker secrets lurking within this eerie, zombie-infested environment. Even if you manage to master this game, there are several alternative plot and game paths that will keep you coming back for more. Your shooting patterns and on-screen actions will determine the plot path and gaming areas that you can explore. Skilled shooters and well-trained zombie slayers will be rewarded with secret game areas and unusual plot twists. By saving the lives of innocent bystanders, you will usually be able to take a shorter path to the end of the game level. In addition, you'll often gain health bonuses that enable you to play longer. If you complete the game without allowing any hostages to die, you'll even unlock a secret bonus room. A few years ago, Sega disappointed some hardcore fans with its less-than-perfect home translation of the original House of the Dead. With House of the Dead 2, Sega has fully redeemed itself. --Brett Atwood

Based on Philippa Gregory's best-selling novel The Little House. BAFTA winning actress Francesca Annis (Cranford Jane Eyre Reckless) stars alongside renowned film stage and television actors Tim Pigott-Smith (Alice in Wonderland ENRON Foyle’s War) and Rupert Evans (Emma The Palace Hellboy) and rising star Lucy Griffiths (Collision Robin Hood U Be Dead). The drama follows the story of Ruth (Griffiths) who is married to career minded Patrick (Evans) as she is pushed towards the limits of her own sanity when she becomes entangled in the lives of her wealthy but interfering in-laws Elizabeth (Annis) and Frederick (Pigott-Smith). After falling unexpectedly pregnant Ruth finds herself swept along on a tide of apparently well-intentioned family gestures which leave the previously independent teacher detached from her former city life and living in the little house at the end of her in-laws driveway. Ruth struggles to bond with her demanding baby son and her mother-in-law is quick to intervene. As she struggles with Postpartum psychosis and unresolved feelings about her mother’s suicide an all consuming fear grips Ruth that her mother-in-law is unnaturally obsessed with her grandson.

It may seem a rather minor innovation in The House of the Dead III, but the chance to spray huge amounts of buckshot at zombies and their fellow mutated friends does make for a rather different experience than trying to go for pinpoint accuracy via a pistol. Although the fact that the gun automatically reloads seems a rather odd idea because it does slow down the pace of the game a bit. There are some fantastic graphics in The House of the Dead III though, as you move automatically through the various spooky levels shooting zombies and monsters as they appear on the screen. Of course shooting at the zombies is much more fun if you use a lightgun and luckily the MadCatz Blaster has been made with the game specifically in mind. Using the standard controller and an onscreen crosshair still works well enough though, especially if you want a second player to join in with you. The only real problem with the game is a lack of longevity, for although there is a version of The House of the Dead II to unlock there's very little else in terms of extra modes or secrets. Still, if you're a fan of the arcade game, or lightgun games in general, this is top kinetic fun. --David Jenkins

Ealing Studios' output from the 1940s and 1950s helped define what was arguably the golden age for British cinema. It fostered great directors such as Alexander Mackendrick and Robert Hamer while giving stars such as Alec Guinness and Peter Sellers the chance to shine.Starring Mervyn Johns Michael Redgrave and Googie Withers Dead Of Night represented a departure for Ealing from the classic comedy mould and instead a spooky psychological thriller made up of 5 chilling ghost stories. An architect visits a country house only to get trapped in a recurring nightmare involving tales of the occult told by fellow guests at the manor. A portmanteau work from four of Ealing's best directors Dead Of Night preyed masterfully on the country's post-war fears and paranoia.
