Total War: Shogun 2 – Fall Of The Samurai Limited Edition is the innovative stand alone expansion pack that brings you an entirely new perspective on the war of the Boshin; the War Of The Year Of The Dragon. As the age of the Samurai starts to become lost in the modern world you must now decide whether to fight the change as part of the Samurai or embrace this new and industrial modern age. It is 1863 and there is a clash between traditional Samurai culture with the arrival of new Western colonial power and modern weaponry and the future of Japan rests within your decisions. Shogun 2 – Fall Of The Samurai takes place 400 years after where the original game left off and introduces an incredible amount to an already brilliant game uncovering the intricate face off between the Imperial Throne and the last Shogunate. There are now six new playable clans three siding with the modern Imperial (Choshu Satsuma Tosa) and three siding with the old Shogun (Aizu Nagaoka Jozai) meaning a wide variety and choice no matter which side you choose. This is the dawn of an empire and now three foreign powers have been introduced; France America and England each show a vital interest in Japan's future but whether for better or worse is up to you. This expansion pack has redeveloped the campaign map adding in new areas for you to explore and conquer including the island Ezo which expands the map northwards. To work with the map being larger than ever before and to coincide with this modern era railway networks have been introduced allowing easier travel for your armies and agents from region to region. Your enemies will also possess railway networks; these can easily be sabotaged and their transport blocked if you take control of their railway stations or part of the railway line. There are also improved siege battle mechanics that allow you to upgrade your tower defences with a specific defence speciality ranging from archery matchlock and Gatling gun. There are 39 brand new land units including modern range Gatling and Armstrong guns which are now controllable in a new third person mode. Some of these units can be recruited from the foreign powers; the British Royal Marines the US Marine Corps and the French Marines. There are also ten brand new naval units bringing in a hefty number of twenty one ships in total. These range from steam powered war ships that are bursting at the seams with modern artillery to torpedo boats artillery laden steamers and even ironclad ships which can be purchased from the foreign powers. These new units introduce more complex and engrossing land and sea interactions and sieges. During a battle on land you can call upon offshore support in order to ensure your victory; these include campaign map bombardments where offshore naval units can attack armies and cities in adjacent coastal areas on the campaign map itself. There are also coastal gun emplacements that can attack enemy ships during port siege battles meaning that everything to do with land and sea interactions has been completely revamped in order to work with this modern era of Shogun 2 – Fall Of The Samurai. There are new building and technology trees as well as three brand spanking new agent types: Foreign Veteran Ishin Shishi and Shinshengumi. Each of these new agents have their own skill tree to progress through and the Ninja and Geisha agents have had their skill trees improved upon and updated. Multiplayer has also been revamped introducing Multiplayer 2.0. In C-12 Final Resistance, another post-apocalyptic view of the future, you play the bionic Lieutenant Vaughan, sent in to clean up Earth from hordes of robotic enemies. The game looks stylish and is a combination of puzzle solving and good old-fashioned shooting; the gameplay is entertaining and the added bonus of a first-person mode adds an extra dimension. Things can become frustrating because of some clumsy controls, though once mastered the game does become involving and you're soon swept up in its varied and diverse missions. From stealth and mayhem to search and rescue, this game should have enough features to keep anyone happy, though it lacks the sophistication of Syphon Filter or Metal Gear Solid. --Rob Holliday An evil wizard has returned from the dead with a mind for vengeance in MediEvil, and you've been brought back from the dead to stop him. Perhaps the world's least worthy hero, you set out to save the land. The game's animation and humour are reminiscent of Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas; if this alone isn't enough to thrill you, the difficulty level will. This is one of the few games that seems to keep itself near the perfect level--difficult enough to keep you interested, easy enough to keep you from getting frustrated. The perspective perfectly complements the gameplay and animation style: the 3-D follow-cam allows you, in most places, to look around with ease. After a successful couple of outings on the PSone, it’s been a bit of mystery as to what’s happened to Sir Daniel Fortesque (deceased). In MediEvil: Resurrection, he returns from the grave yet again, for a welcome new PSP outing that breathes new life into his undead adventures. The MediEvil games don’t do anything especially original or taxing -- they’re simply very well designed action adventures with a nice line in comedy situations, particularly the craven coward that is Sir Dan himself. This PSP game is, however, completely new, with a much improved combat system and a lot more weapons to employ. Naturally the graphics are greatly improved from the PSone games, and indeed this could be the best looking of all the PSP launch titles, with some beautifully subtle lighting and impressively complex levels and enemies. The gameplay itself is a bit shallow, but played in small doses – as the portable format encourages – you’re unlikely to get tired of it before the end.As an extra bonus, there are also eight wireless multiplayer mini-games, none of which are of any real consequence but perfectly entertaining with a few friends. Inspired by the war epics of director Akira Kurosawa, Shogun: Total War perfectly captures the chaos, conflict, and beauty of ancient warfare. Shogun thrusts you into the unstable politics of 16th-century feudal Japan. You command thousands of loyal samurai and other troops against six other factions in massive battles that will determine the fate of Japan itself. You can learn the basics of the art of war by playing the included tutorial missions, hone and test your skills by loading historical battles, or enter the campaign mode and go for the ultimate goal: becoming Shogun. Campaign play is divided into two portions--the strategic overview map where you manage your armies and provinces, and the tactical combat mode where battles are fought. The strategy portion isn't too deep. There aren't many buildings or unit types to build, and the diplomatic options are limited. It merely serves to provide a frame for the battle sequences, and that's where Shogun really shines. Battles are fought on beautiful 3-D landscapes, with forests to hide in, fortifications to storm, and rolling hills to climb. Weather effects like rain and snow aren't just there for looks--they have a dramatic impact on gameplay. Wet conditions will render the match-lit guns useless and also decrease the range of archers because their bowstrings get wet. Troops get bogged down by wet gear, and high winds push arrows aside. Even the seasons affect battles, as longer or shorter days in the summer and winter determine how long you have to defeat your foe (or how long you must fend off an assault). But weather and time are the least of your worries. Effectively managing your troops is the key to victory and also the toughest aspect of the game. There are dozens of formations to choose from and hundreds of tactical tricks to exploit. Keeping your archers, cavalry units and various types of foot-samurai all pointing the right way and effectively supporting one another is half the battle. The game interface and keyboard shortcuts make things easier, but Shogun's manual is just terrible. A simulation this fast-paced and complex deserves thorough and accurate documentation, but you'll have to buy the separate strategy guide to get any worthwhile information. Fortunately, those with a little patience and an interest in the game should be able to figure things out, and they'll be rewarded with one of the most realistic and fun real-time war games available. --T Byrl Baker Minimize
